고려 대각국사 의천은 동아불교사상 중요한 인물이다. 그는 고귀한 왕자였으나 어려서부터 출가하여 화엄을 배웠고, 중국에 온 이후 천태, 선종 등과 같은 명망 있는 여러 종과 종파를 널리 배웠다. 귀국해서는 화엄을 널리 전파하였으며, 고려 천태를 창건하였고 아울러 선(禪)과 교(敎)를 통섭하였다. 의천은 불교경전과 전적에 있어서 뛰어난 공헌을 하였으니, 일찍이 경전과 전적을 가지고 왔으며, 널리 장소(章疏)를 수집하였다. 의천은 중국 항주의 혜인사(慧因寺)에서 머물렀다. 고려사(高麗寺)라고도 칭하는 이 사찰은 중국과 조선반도에의 불교가 교류되었다는 증거이기도 하다.
이 사찰은 근래에 복원되었는데, 진열실에는 22분의 고승의 사적을 전시하였고, 의천당(義天堂)에는 청동으로 주조된 대사의 좌상(坐像)이 진열되어 있다. 또한 의천이 송에 들어와 법을 구하던 일과 귀국할 때의 항해도가 석회암으로 부조되어 있다. 복원한 혜인고려사는 확실히 중국과 고대 한국 간에 교류했던 다양한 사적이 펼쳐있어 중요한 사원문화 박물관이라고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Daegak Guksa Uicheon in the Goryeo dynasty is an important person in East Asian buddhist thoughts. Although he was a noble prince, he became a buddhist monk at an early age and learned the Avatamska Sutra. After he came to China, he widely learned the renowned denominations like Cheontae, the Zen sect, and so on. After he returned from China, he spread the Avatamska Sutra widely, founded Cheontae of Goryeo and combined the practice and teachings. Uicheon contributed greatly to buddhist sutras and books, brought and collected them. Uicheon stayed at Haeinsa in Hangzhou of China. This temple also called Goryeosa is a proof that there was an interchange of Buddhism between China and the Peninsula.
This temple was recently restored. In its display room, the historical remains of 22 high Buddhist monks were exhibited. In Uicheon"s room, the great Buddhist master"s seated statue made of bronze was exhibited. The situation in which Uicheon sought for Dharmas after he came in Song Dynasty and a navigation chart when he returned were carved in relief. Restored Haein-Goryeosa where there were historical remains between China and ancient Korea can be said to be a temple cultural museum.
