이 글은 조선의 왕세자로서는 드물게 오랫동안 외국에 머물며 명나라가 망하고 청나라가 성립되는 과정을 지켜보며 이민족들의 다양한 문화를 접했던 소현세자의 해외 체험과 문화 수용 양상을 살펴본 것이다. 소현세자의 심양 생활은 심양에서 서울로 보낸 보고서를 모아둔『심양장계(瀋陽狀啓)』와『심양일기(瀋陽日記)』에 기록되어 있으며, 북경에서의 생활은 예수회 신부 아담 샬(Adam Shall 湯若望 : 1591~1666)의 회고록 일부에 기록되어 있다. 아담 샬의 회고록에는 소현세자가 쓴 편지가 실려 있어 서학이나 서교에 대한 태도가 직접 드러나 있지만 장계나 일기는 소현세자가 남긴 기록이 아니기 때문에 그 내면이 자세히 드러나 있지 않아 심양에서 보고 들었던 청의 문화에 대한 태도를 구체적으로 알기는 어렵다. 그러나 세자가 심양에서 겪었던 생활을 통해 새로운 문화에 대한 태도나 인식을 재구해 보는 것은 가능하리라 생각된다. 소현세자가 중국에 머문 기간은 청 태조 누르하치(1559~1626)를 이어 즉위한 청 태종 홍타이지(1592~1643)가 조선과 몽고를 정벌하고 명나라를 공격하여 중국 통일을 완성해 갔던 시기로 전쟁이 계속되던 시기였다. 무릇 전쟁이란 무력으로 상대방을 제압하고 살육하는 야만적인 행위이다. 그렇기 때문에 동시에 전쟁만큼 문화를 일시에 변화시키는 것도 없을 것이다. 소현세자는 전쟁 시기에 청의 수도인 심양과 북경에서 생활하면서 주변의 이민족 문화를 보았고, 서양의 문화를 접할 기회를 가졌으며, 강제적인 문화의 변화를 목격하였다. 인질의 처지로 자유롭게 사람을 만나기도 어렵고 외출도 자유롭지 않았지만, 적어도 당시의 심양 또는 북경에서 목격한 문화들은 닫힌 사회에서 온 젊은 세자에게 새로운 문화적 감수성을 갖게 하고 그 문화들이 갖는 장점들을 이해하게 했을 것으로 짐작된다. 그 변화는 조선 조정으로서는 결코 반갑지 않은, 위험한 것이었지만 소현세자는 새로움이 주는 매혹 앞에서 조용히 동화되어 갔을 것으로 보인다. 이 글은 소현세자가 심양과 북경에서 체험한 새로운 문화의 내용이 어떠한 것이었을까를 구체적으로 살펴보았다는 점에서 의미를 가진다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper tries to explore Sohyunseja's experiences of living in a foreign country and contacting new culture. While Sohyunseja was forced to stay in Shenyang(瀋陽), he saw the fall of Ming dynasty(明朝) and the rise of Qing dynasty and had a chance to contact diverse cultures of other people. His life in Shenyang is recorded in Reports from Shenyang(瀋陽狀啓) and Diaries of Shenyang(瀋陽日記) and his life in Beijing is found in the memoir of Jesuit Adam Shall. In the former works, Sohyunseja's inside is rarely found because those reports and diaries were not written by himself. So it is difficult to know what was his opinions of culture of Qing dynasty. On the other hand, in the memoir of Adam Shall, there found a letter from Sohyunseja to Adam Shall, where Sohyunseja's thought of Western Learning(西學) and Christianity(西敎) is directly expressed. On the basis of this document it is possible to reconstruct Sohyunseja's thought and attitude to new culture.
In the period when Sohyunseja stayed in Qing, Hong Taiji(淸太宗), the king after Nuruhachi wages lots of wars in order to accomplish the unification of the whole China, attacking Ming dynasty and conquering neighboring countries such as Joseon and Mongo. As is known, war, a cruel and ruthless attempt to conquer others by military forces resulted in the radical change of the culture of a country. In this war period, Sohyunseja stayed in Shenyang, the capital of Qing, and Beijing, experienced other cultures of neighboring people, contacted western cultures and saw the forced changes of culture. In spite of his situation as a hostage which had limited his freedom to go out and meet other people, the experiences of seeing other cultures might give him new sensibility and new understanding of the advantages of other cultures. The meaning of this study is lied in close examination of Sohyunseja's experiences and thoughts of new cultures in Shenyang and Beijing.
