지금까지 일제 식민주의 행정제도가 구한말의 조선왕조의 행정 지명체계를 해체하던 시기에 어떻게 명명된 지명이 종족집단의 기억사와 관련하였는지를 연구한 경우는 없다. 이 논문은 종족 구성원들이 청도에 대한 지역화된 다양한 역사적 기억을 지명 명명 과정에서 상호 연관시키는 방식을 이해하는데 그 목적을 두었다.
첫째, 1914년 청도면이라는 지명이 명명되는 과정에는 경상남북도의 접경지라는 지리공간적 위치, 일제 강점기라는 정치적 상황과 지배와 피지배의 사회관계, 종족집단의 집단기억을 근간으로 한 역사적 장소에 대한 실천 등이 관련하였다. 종족집단은 이러한 요소를 토대로 하면서 과거에 대한 역사적 경험과 지역적 기억을 반영하는 지명을 명명하였다.
둘째, 면 명칭이 명명되는 과정에는 지역 종족집단이 고려시대부터 일제 강점기 이전까지 청도와 관련한 시조와 명조, 입향조와 관련한 사료, 족보, 기념비적 장소 등에 나타난 그들의 인물됨·사건·행적·사회적 지위 등에 대한 일화, 그리고 그 의미에 대한 장기적인 역사적 기억을 지속시키기 위한 전략을 실천하였다. 이러한 역사적 기억은 종족집단의 시원부터 연속된 의식이 누적된 것이라기보다 어떠한 시기에 한정된 기억의 단층을 상황에 따라 그들이 선택하여 조합시킴으로써 이루어진 것이다.
셋째, 그들의 기억사는 공간적 범주로 전환되어 결합되었다. 그것은 종족집단이 이주·정착·분파하는 과정과 관련한 그 근원이 된 시조의 산소 영역, 마을, 미시지역(산동과 산서), 그리고 인접군 사이에 향권을 다투는 접경지역과 포괄적 관련성을 갖는다.

This purpose of this study is to understand the place names related to the memory of Kim lineage group when the Japanese colonial administrative system dismantled the place naming system of the Joseon Dynasty. It aims to understand how Kim lineage members correlate their various localized historical memories of Cheongdo(청도) during the naming process.
First, the process of naming the territory “Cheongdo-myeon(청도면)” in 1914 was related to various factors such as the geographical and spatial location of the border areas between Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do(경상북도-경상남도), the political situation of the Japanese colonial period, the social relations of dominance and subordinance, and the verification of historical places based on collective memory of Kim lineage group. Based on these factors, Kim lineage group designated places that reflected the historical experiences and local memories of the past.
Second, in the process of naming the territory “Cheongdo-myeon(청도면),” Kim lineage group pursued strategies to explore the narratives and long-term historical memories about their ancestors’ virtues and social status from the founder of Kim lineage, one of the Korean verse forms, and several statements from the Goryeo(고려) period before Japanese colonization. Moreover, they examined documentation about early generation immigrants, their pedigrees, and monumental places to keep names significant and meaningful. These historical memories are not accumulations of consciousness consecrated from the origin of Kim lineage group, but they are made by combining the selected dislocation of memory limited during certain periods and contexts.
Third, the historical memory of Kim lineage group was transformed into a growing spatial class. It has a comprehensive relevance to the process of their immigration –settlement– dispersal, ancestral cemeteries, towns, and the bordering territory with intertwined authority with neighboring areas.
