동화작가로 널리 알려진 권정생은 역사동화에 많은 관심을 가지고 있었으며, 『몽실 언니』이후 역사 소설 집필을 계획했다. 동학에서부터 해방, 현대에 이르는 역사동화를 집필할의도로 『한티재 하늘』을 시작하였으나 2권까지밖에 내지 못하고 작고하였다. 동화 작가로권정생에 대한 연구는 많이 이루어졌지만 『한티재 하늘』은 주목받지 못하였다. 본 연구에서는 역사 소설 『한티재 하늘1·2』에 주목하여 권정생의 역사의식을 탐구하고자한다. 『한티재 하늘1·2』은 앞선 동화작품들의 성과를 바탕으로 배우지 못한 가난한 백성들의 역사를 담고 있다. 작가가 어떤 관점에서 어떤 사건을 중심으로 이야기를 엮어 나갔는지,어떤 인물들을 내세워 형상화하였는지, 당대를 살아온 사람들의 삶을 통해 어떤 이야기를 하고 싶었는가를 파악한다면 작품과 작가에 대한 문학사적인 자리매김이 될 것으로 보인다. 먼저 『한티재 하늘1.2』의 서사를 살펴보면 경상북도 안동의 삼밭골과 한티재를 주공간으로하여 1895년부터 1937년까지의 삶을 담고 있다. 양반이라고는 없는 뜨내기들이 모여 형성된작은 마을에서 살고 있는 삼 세대의 이야기가 펼쳐진다. 1세대의 인물로 문노인과 수동댁,2세대의 인물로 정원, 복남, 분들네, 3세대의 인물로 장득과 이순, 서억과 이석, 귀돌과 분옥등이 서사의 핵심 인물이다. 동학난으로 남편이 죽거나 자식이 죽게 되고, 가장을 잃은 여인들이 자식을 키우며 살아가지만 결국 그 자식들의 삶 또한 일제 강점기 속에서 몰락하거나 가족해체를 맞게 된다. 이 작품의 서사에 드러난 특징으로는 첫째 역사적 사건은 전경화 되고 가난한 사람들의 일상을 전면에 부각시킨다는 점이다. 동학과 기미년 만세는 미미하게 다루어지며 백성들이부르는 노래로 동학을, 동네에 누가 가담했다더라는 소문으로 다룬다. 오히려 먹고 사는문제와 직결되는 농민조합 운동을 부각시킨다. 삼밭골 사람들이 얼마나 배가 고팠는지, 그속에도 결혼을 하고 아이를 낳고, 아이들이 자라 다시 혼인을 하게 되는 일상을 담고 있다. 다음 특징으로 영웅적 인물은 배제되고 평범한 여성들의 삶을 부각시킨다. 여성들의 삶가운데 수동댁과 이순을 통해 인내와 희생의 삶이 두드러진다. 이런 점에서 볼 때 『한티재 하늘1·2』에 드러난 역사의식은 가난한 백성들의 일상적 삶이역사를 구성해 왔다는 관점에 서 있다. 그리고 영웅이 역사를 이끌어 간 것이 아니라 약자들이 삶을 견디며 살아온 것이 바로 역사라고 본다. 사회적 약자는 이기적 인물도 있으며 포용적인물도 있다. 그 가운데 포용적 인물이 지닌 희생과 인내가 삶의 주요한 가치로 다루어지고있다. 권정생은 가난하고 못 배운 여성들의 인내와 희생이 우리나라 근현대사에서 가장빛나는 점임을 부각시키고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Widely known as an author of children``s stories, Gwon Jeong-saeng had much interest in historical children``s stories and made a plan of writing a historical novel after his My Elder Sister Mongshil. He began to write Hantijae Haneul with the intention of writing a historical children``s story spanning from Donghak through Liberation to the modern times, but he passed away only after two volumes of it. There have been many researches on him as a writer of children``s stories, but his Hantijae Haneul has not received attention from the researchers. This study set out to investigate his historical consciousness, focusing on his historical novel Hantijae Haneul 1·2. Based on the achievements of his previous children``s stories before the historical novel, the author addressed the history of poor people that received no education in it. If there are efforts made to examine the perspectives and events he focused on to tell a story, the figures he embodied, and the stories he tried to tell through the lives of people that lived throughout his days, they will help himand his works hold a place in the history of literature. As for the narrative of Hantijae Haneul 1·2, it covers the lives of people between 1895 and 1937 with principal backgrounds set in Sambatgol and Hantijae, Angdong, Gyeongsangbuk Province. The novel tells a story of three generations living in a small village formed by wandering individuals with no noblemen. The core characters of its narrative include Old Man Mun and Sudongdaek from the first generation, Jeongwon, Boknam, and Bundeulne from the second generation, and Jangdeuk and Yisun, Seoeok and Yiseok, and Guidol and Bunok from the third generation. Husbands and children are killed in the middle of Donghak Uprising. After losing the heads of household, women go on living and raise their children. The lives of their children, however, collapse or face family dissolution during the Japanese rule in the end. There are a couple of characteristics of its narrative: first, the historical events arepushed back in the foreground, whereas the daily lives of poor people are brought in front. Donghak and Manse Movement of Gimi Year are dealt with marginally. Donghak is described with the songs sung by people and the rumors about who joined the movement in the village. The farmers association movement is rather highlighted, being directly connected to the livelihood of people. The novel depicts the daily lives of the people of Sambatgol including how they suffered from hunger, got married and gave birth to children, and watched their children grow and get married. Next, the writer puts the lives of ordinary women in the front with heroic figures excluded. The life of patience and sacrifice is prominent in the story through Sudongdaek and Yisun. Given those findings, it is apparent that the historical consciousness of Hantijae Haneul 1·2 takes a perspective that history has been made up of daily lives of poor people. It also sees history as the enduring lives of the weak rather than the leading lives of heroes. There are selfish individuals and also tolerant ones in the socially weak, and the novel deals with the sacrifice and patience of the latter as major values. Gwon highlights that the patience and sacrifice of uneducated poor women marks the brightest point in the modern and contemporary history of Korea.
