Seo Geojeong(徐居正 : 1420∼1488) was a national literary scholar who complied with a governmental request, and had a vested interest in the society. Therefore his literary expressions on reality were cheerful and calm in most cases.
But he also wrote a few poems which concerned the dark sides of people's livelihood. Through these poems he mentioned:
First, people's tax burden by governmental exploitation.
Second, natural disasters which brought about the poverty of peasants.
Thirg, actuality of class discrimination and the lower classes' sorrow.
Yet, in this poetry he didn't express his sharp criticism of the government's wrong policy. He only insinuated that. In addition, he kept a sense of distance from the improverished life of the people.
This passivity, first of all, was because of his social position and circumstances. But on the other hand, as a critic of poetry, he essentially preferred mild, descriptive, and implied expressions. He thought that such expressions would touch the ruler's and reader's heartstrings more effectively.
