This study aims to see how Simcheongjeon was reinterpreted in a modern way focusing on the movie, “Madame Ppaengdeog”. The most common media in modern society is multimedia environment and internet. In order to find the meeting point between these and classic novels, we will have to pay attention to the characteristics of today’s multimedia environment. To this end, this study analyzed the movie “Madame Ppaengdeog” and Simcheongjeon from the perspective intertextuality.
First of all, this study examined the content element of Simcheongjeon that is still loved today, through the analysis of narrative structure, characters, and space. By looking into how the characters in Simcheongjeon solve problems, it analyzed how their characteristics were transformed and modified in “Madame Ppaengdeog”. Also, it reviewed the reason why ' the Palace of the Dragon King', one of the most interesting elements in Simcheongjeon was put in the setting. The setting of the fantastic place, ' the Palace of the Dragon King', helps contribute to the realization of the theme in Simcheongjeon.
Next, this study analyzed in detail how the content elements of Simcheongjeon was realized in the scenario of “Madame Ppaengdeog” through the changes in character setting, variations of narrative, and changes in time and space. In terms of the changes in character setting, it pointed out the characteristics of “Madame Ppaengdeog” characters were strengthened or transformed for the unconventional ending. Regarding variations of narrative, analysis was done in two ways, one of which about the insertion of events that do not exist in Simcheongjeon, and the other about transforming main story units of Simcheongjeon. In terms of changes in time and space, it examined how the theme was realized through the changes in the setting of time and space, as the movie could not adopt the fantastic elements of Simcheongjeon.
Lastly, it looked at what was changed from the scenario when “Madame Ppaengdeog” was made into a movie, and tried to find the significance of “Madame Ppaengdeog”. When a scenario is made into a movie, the director’s intention is involved and this can be seen as a transformation to create a twist in the plot. This study will review the intention of the director in “Madame Ppaengdeog” by analyzing the differences made when a complete story is reborn through the use of different medium. Through this analysis, the significance of “Madame Ppaengdeog” will be found and this study, based on this discussion, will examine the meaning that can be found when “Madame Ppaengdeog” and Simcheongjeon are analyzed from the perspective of intertextuality.
As for the limitations of this study, it targeted the scenario of “Madame Ppaengdeog” and analyzed its contents rather than the characteristics of the movie itself. However, one of the most appropriate ways that classics can maintain its life and be enjoyed by the public is to review the way it was transformed. In this sense, from the stand point of a classics researcher, it would be significant that the movie “Madame Ppaengdeog” was analyzed with the focus on Simcheongjeon.

본 연구는 영화 <마담뺑덕>을 중심으로 <심청전>이 현대적으로 어떻게 재해석 되었는지를 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 현대 사회에서 가장 흔히 접할 수 있는 것이 멀티미디어 환경과 인터넷이라는 매체이다. 우리가 이들과 고전소설의 접점을 마련하자면 고전소설 연구 역시 다매체 환경이라는 오늘날의 매체적 특성에 대해 관심을 가져야 할 것으로 보인다. 이에 본 연구는 영화 <마담뺑덕>과 <심청전>을 상호텍스트 관점에서 분석하였다.
먼저 현대에까지 사랑받을 수 있는 <심청전>의 콘텐츠 요소를 서사구조, 인물, 공간의 분석을 통해 살펴보았다. <심청전> 중심 인물들의 문제 해결 양상을 살펴 이들의 성격이 <마담뺑덕>에 어떻게 변용·수용되었는지를 분석해 보았다. 또한 <심청전>의 가장 큰 흥미 요소 중에 하나인 ‘용궁’ 설정의 이유 대해 살펴보았다. <심청전>은 환상적 공간인 ‘용궁’을 설정하면서 작품의 주제 실현에 기여하도록 한다.
다음으로는 <심청전>의 콘텐츠 요소들이 영화 <마담뺑덕> 시나리오에 어떻게 실현되었는지를 인물 설정의 변모, 서사의 변주, 시·공간의 변화를 통해 구체적으로 분석해보았다. 인물 설정의 변모 부분에서는 <마담뺑덕>의 인물들이 현대 파편화된 인간성을 반영하는 인물로 변용된 점을 지적하였다. 심학규, 심청, 덕이, 덕이 엄마, 청이 엄마 등 <마담뺑덕>의 중심 인물들의 설정을 살피고 그들의 인물 설정의 의미를 분석하였다.
서사의 변주 부분에서는 <심청전>에 없는 사건의 삽입과 <심청전>의 주요 화소를 변용시킨 사건으로 나누어 분석하였다. 덕이와 심학규와의 만남을 일탈적 만남으로 보고, 덕이와 심청의 만남에서 동성애적 요소가 드러남을 살펴보았다. 또한 여성인물들인 덕이와 심청의 복수 과정에 대한 부분을 분석하였다. 다음으로는 <심청전>의 주요 화소인 심청의 귀환과 심학규의 개안의 현대적 의미를 살펴 <마담뺑덕>과 <심청전>을 상호텍스트적 관점에서 볼 수 있음을 밝혔다.
시·공간의 변화에서는 <마담뺑덕>에서는 <심청전>의 환상적 요소를 그대로 차용할 수 없어, 현대적 변용을 통한 시간의 흐름과 공간 설정의 변화를 통해 주제가 실현되는 점을 살펴보았다.
마지막으로 <마담뺑덕> 시나리오가 영화화 되면서 변용된 양상을 살피고, 영화 <마담뺑덕>의 의미를 찾도록 하겠다. 시나리오가 영상물로 제작되면서 감독의 의도가 개입되는데, 이는 반전을 위한 변용이라고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 한편의 완결된 이야기가 매체 변용이 다시 이뤄지면서 보이는 차이를 분석하여 영화 <마담뺑덕>에서의 감독의 의도를 살피도록 하겠다. 이러한 분석을 통해 영화 <마담뺑덕>만의 의미를 찾을 수 있을 것인데, 본고에서는 위의 논의를 바탕으로 영화 <마담뺑덕>과 <심청전>이 상호텍스트적 관점에서 분석될 수 있는 점을 밝히도록 하겠다.
본 연구는 <마담뺑덕>의 시나리오를 분석의 대상으로 삼아 영화 자체의 특성보다는 내용적 분석에 그친 점을 한계로 볼 수 있다. 그러나 고전 작품이 생명력 있게 유지되고 대중과 함께 향유될 수 있는 적합한 방식 중 하나는 그변용 양상을 살피는 일일 것이다. 이에 고전 연구자의 입장에서 영화 <마담뺑덕>을 원전 <심청전>을 중심으로 두고 분석하였다는 점에서 본 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.
