본고의 목적은 고려시대 일반 民으로 존재했던 白丁을 재검토하여 이들의 성격을 구체적으로 드러내는 것이다. 고려시기 白丁으로 대표되는 일반 民 사회에 대한 기존연구는, 국가로부터의 職役부담과 토지분급의 대상민으로 丁戶를 설정하고, 이에 해당되지 않는 나머지 농민들을 모두 白丁으로 이해하였다. 그러나 이러한 견해는 고려사기 일반 民이 白丁이라고 지칭된 의미를 인식하지 못한 것으로, 이들을 단순히 통시대적으로 존재해 왔던 전근대 농민들로만 묻어두었던 한계가 있다. 때문에 여기서는 職役부담과 토지분급의 非대상자로 인식되어, 일반 良人 농민층이라고만 이해되었던 고려시기 白丁을 다시 검토해 본 것이다.
이를 위해 우선적으로는 고려시기 丁의 내용을 人戶와 토지로 구분하여 살펴보았다. 이러한 논의는 이 시기 丁戶에 대한 성격도 아울러 살피게 했고, 검토 결과 이들은 자립 소농민층이라고 할 수 있었다. 그리하여 고려시기 白丁은 자립 소농인 정호층 한편에서, 토지를 소유하지 못했던 無田농민으로 존재했을 것으로 상정하였다. 더하여 白丁이라는 이들의 名義 또한 토지를 소유하지 못했던 성격과 연결되는 것으로 언급하였다.
마지막 章에서는 白丁의 경제적 기반에 관련된 사례를 검토하여, 이들이 고려사회에서는 그 어떤 토지도 자신의 소유로 실현하지 못했음을 다시 확인하였다. 고로 어떠한 경작지에라도 붙어 있어야 했을 것이다. 끝으로 役부담 사례에서 드러난 白丁은 특정한 役을 부담하는데 동원되어졌는데, 이는 當 사회에서 토지를 소유하지 못했던 이들로서는, 일정한 경작지 내지 役에 매여 있을 수밖에 없던 것은 당연한 일이었을 것이다. 한편 役부담을 통해서는, 궁극적으로 白丁民이 누린 사회·신분적 성격을 자세히 살필 수 있었지만, 이는 단순히 전망해 보는데 그쳤다.
결국 본고는 이 시기 일반 대중을 이룬 白丁이 토지를 소유하지 못한 상태로 존재함으로써, 한국의 중세라고 이해된 고려시기가 대토지소유자 곧 大私有의 사회였음을 드러내었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this article is to reexamine the Baekchong(白丁) that had been existed as ordinary people to expose the character of it concretely. The established studies on the ordinaly people that was represented as Baekchong are as follows. It can be possible to set up Jongho(丁戶) as the object for the charge of Jikyok(職役) and the distribution of land, to understand the other people who are not included in Jongho as Baekchong in Koryo Dynasty. But this opinion is not properly made with misunderstanding that how the ordinary people had been called as Baekchong. And it has the limit that the Baekchong was misconcepted only as the peasant of traditional period existed through all the time. So in this article I would like to reexamine the existing opinion that the Baekchong is not the object for the charge of Jikyok and the distribution of land, that is, self-tenant farmer as usual.
In this purpose, at first I looked to divine the Inho(人戶) and the land as the Jong(丁) in Koryo Dynasty. I can not help examining the Jongho in this period, so Jongho(丁戶) was emerged as the self-tenant farmer in the end. And then on hand the character of Baekchong(白丁) is the self-tenant farmer in Koryo Dynasty, the other hand the Baekchong is the class of peasant who has not the owner of land. And also the title Baekchong that is the name of people is connected with that peasant.
In the last chapter, reviewing the case on the land of Baekchong, I can confirm they could not own the economic base as theirs in Koryo Dynasty. Therefore I understand that Baekchong was attached to any farming land. In the last Baekchong emerged in the case of the Yok(役) was mobilized in special service. It was inevitable to Baekchong that they could not escaped from the farming land or Yok. Besides, through the charge of Yok, I can consider the social and status character closely. But it is stopped with just preview.
In this article, as the Baekchong representing the ordinary people was existed with no owner of land, I can find the fact that the Koryo Dynasty, that is the medieval period, is the society of great land owner, that is, great privately-owned.
