본고에서는 조선 중기 대표적 禮學者인 愚伏鄭經世(1563-1633)의 만시를 대상으로 하여, 여기에 나타난 죽음의 형상화 방식과 지인의 죽음에 대처하는 작자의 태도를 살펴보고자 한 것이다. 시어와 표현이 관습화되어 있는 만시의 일반적인 특징처럼, 우복의 만시에서 도 동일한 典故나 用事가 서로 다른 인물에 대한 만시에서 상투적으로 나타나기도 하고, 그 전개 방식 또한 고정되어 있는 모습을 보인다. 즉 우복은 공적 관료의 입장에서 만시를 지을 때에 만시 대상 인물의 인물됨과 그의 죽음에 대한 자신의 감회를 서술하면서, 죽음과 관련된 일반적 전고를 차용하되 대상 인물과 자인의 관계를 고려하여 상황에 맞는 관용구를 활용하였다. 이러한 관습적 형상화의 방식으로 대상 인물의 공적 지위나 사회적 위상을 부각시키고 여기에 각 인물과 연관된 자신의 기억을 특별히 附加함으로써 관습적 표현으로 인한 상투성을 극복하였다. 반면 만시의 대상이 친우나 친족일 경우에도 장르 자체의 관습성 때문에 구성 방식에서는 인물에 대한 평가와 자신의 감회라는 일반적 구성을 취하고 있지만, 그 내용에서는 앞의 경우와 뚜렷한 차이를 보인다. 즉 만시에서 절반 이상 언급된 대상 인물과의 기억은, 그의 문집 곳곳에 남아 있는 기록을 찾아 읽을 때에 마침내 한 편의 완전한 서사물처럼 완결되는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 이를 통해 우복이 개인적 친분에 의한 만시를 지을 때에, 전반부에 인물과의 인연을 길게 배치시킴으로써 만시의 관습성을 뛰어넘고자 했음을 볼 수 있다. 또한 그는 상황에 맞는 전고의 인용이나 시구에 대한 自註를 통해 구체성을 보완하여 만시의 장르적 제약을 극복하고자 하였다. 이러한 의도는 대상 인물과 관련된 문집 속의 여타 기록들 속에서 이해할 때, 창작의 맥락이 온전히 이해되고, 작품의 특징 또한 선명히 부각되도록 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to study the figuration method and attitude of the poet, Woobok Jeong Gyeong-se(1563-1633), a prominent scholar in the mid-Joseon Dynasty, towards a death in his monody. In "Woobokjib", a collection of his poems, there were around 190 chinese poems, and 42 monodies under 38 subtitles, which makes up about 20 % of his poems. Like characteristics of other general monodies with fixed poetic words and expressions, in terms of describing the deceased, in Woobok`s poetry, similar kinds of traditional events and poetic expressions were found in a cut-and-dried manner, and, likewise, the manner of developing the story appeared conventional. That is, when he wrote a monody from the position of a public officer, he described the deceased`s personality, as well as his own emotions about him. In describing events, he wrote in the general style in the time, yet, at the same time, in describing the deceased, he used proper idioms in accordance with the situation with the consideration for the dead. By the use of figuration of idioms, he enhanced the dead person`s official or social position, and, by adding his own memories, he overcame the cliche in the poetry. However, when it was about his close kith and kin, due to the conventional aspect of the genre itself, its form was constructed in a general way; evaluation about the person and his personal feelings, but contents were far different from the others mentioned above. In other words, all the memories of the deceased mourned in the monodies would only be completed when all collected memories of him were combined, just like understanding a narrative work. Considering the characteristics of the genre of monody, he was not be able to express all his griefs about the memories of the person and his death into the work, but we could see that he tried to explain the connection between the dead and himself, which might had been be longer than 10 years. Based on all this evidences, when Woobok wrote a poem dependent on his friendship with the deceased, he positioned the connection with the person in the front part of his poetry in order to avoid using cliche.
