King Cho^ng-Jo(正祖), the 22th king of 'Chosun Dynasty'(朝鮮王朝), had reined for 24years, from 1777 to 1800, until he died of disease. He played a significant role in the process of Modernization of Chosun Dynasty as a king in the 18th century, a period of worldwide tumultuous change, due to his prominency in politics·economics·society and culture.
He was even called as a king scholar, for he was excellent in scholarship and politics at the same time. His scholarship was powerful and practical enough to influence the political arena. In the center of his vast realm of thought lies 'the though of the confucian mean'(中庸思想). Having already formed its characteristic and flow in the history of the confucianism, the thought of the confucian mean was not only a prime text in the world of Seongrihak(性理學, the study of nature and reason) of Chosun, but also a microcosm of the entire thought of Chosun Dynasty. King Cho^ng-Jo's thought of the confucian mean was academically embodied as Cho^nghaknon(正學論, a theory of right study), politically materialized as Tangpyongchaek(蕩平策, a policy of impartiality), socially developed as Bukhaknon(北學論, a movement of utilitarianism).
King Cho^ng-Jo was distinguished in reinterpreting the given text beyond the prevalent Seongrihak(性理學)-oriented reading. He reconstructed the early confucianism practically, and applied it to the real life. This flexibility and practicality in his thought is unique and original in the academic history of the confucianism, remaining a basis for further study.
