This study examined why forms patterns and production techniques of roof-end tiles used in palaces in late Goryeo(高麗) and early Joseon(朝鮮) were similar to each other. In addition, this study placed emphasis on the possibility that Aryeon roof tiles(牙鍊瓦) found in the literature during the Joseon period were produced by polishing for surface treatment with a focus on the production attributes of repeated polishing for surface treatment on the roof tile surface using tools.
Roof tiles have been considered as a building material representing the prestige of authority buildings since ancient times and excavated from building sites frequently. Moreover, palaces as representative of authority buildings are the supreme space where the king resides and governs the state. Therefore, elements representing the period appear in roof tiles used in palaces. Among them, it was considered appropriate to select roof-end tiles as a target of comparison and analysis of the characteristics of palaces in both periods because patterns at the roof end are exposed.
Therefore, this study analyzed roof-end tiles excavated from authority buildings closely associated with each royal authority with a focus on Kaesong-Royal Palace of Goryeo(開城高麗宮城) and Gyeongbokgung(景福宮) as a representative palace in late Goryeo and early Joseon. According to the results, the elements summarized as the form roof-end tiles, rake joining method between roof-end and flat roof tiles, dragon and phoenix designs, and polishing for surface treatment were maintained in Gyeongbokgung in early Joseon.
Moreover, this study focused on polishing for surface treatment applied to the exposed surface of roof-end and flat tiles among the production attributes. Polishing for surface treatment is a method of repeatedly polishing the surface using tools after roof tiles dry to some extent and was performed to acquire decorativeness by glazed roof tiles and to conduct the secondary formation of roof tiles.
On the other hand, it was regarded that specific name of Aryeon was used for Aryeon roof tiles found in the literature during the Joseon period because they are glazed by polishing the surface. In addition, it was confirmed that Aryeon roof tiles were used in roofs of buildings with high spatial hierarchy such as palaces and Jeongjagak(丁字閣: T-shaped shrine for tomb rites). Therefore, it was considered that polishing for surface treatment found both in late Goryeo and early Joseon was the production method for Aryeon roof tiles used in the Joseon period.
Thus, this study examined how the stylistic continuity of roof-end tiles used in the palaces of Goryeo and Joseon was established. Although Joseon was founded due to changes in thought that dominated Goryeo, it would be difficult to remove the old customs of Goryeo lasted for about 500 years at once. Joseon was founded by bureaucrats who had Neo-Confucian ideology, a variety of social strata such as eunuchs, Buddhist monks, and Feng Shui(風水) experts participated in building Hanyangdoseong(漢陽都城: the Fortress Wall of Seoul).
As described in The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄), in light of the fact that the eunuch in charge of the construction of public buildings in late Goryeo participated actively in that during the Joseon period and Buddhist monks took the initiative in participating in producing roof tiles during the Joseon period and constructing Hanyangdoseong including the construction of Gyeongbokgung and Sungnyemun(崇禮門), the continuity of the roof-end tiles used in the palaces in both periods was supported.
