This essay tries to elucidate why Goryeo-sokyo 高麗俗謠 (Korean song in the period of Goryeo dynasty) have been concerned and how they have been studied in the Korean academic world now, and to examine what is needed and how they are studied from now on.
In the beginning period of Goryeo-sokyo studies, most Korean scholars got started regarding that all the pieces of Goryeo-sokyo were a sort of Korean traditional ethnic culture, thus Korean people should be justly proud of them, and inherit and develop them into forms of modern Korean poetry. These viewpoints based on nationalism and populism have resulted in not a few several hypotheses that has not been confirmed and have seemed to block the way to go near to the reality of it. Most of their inner/external contexts have not been fully explained because of the lack of positive data necessary to reconstruct them. Nevertheless, they have been treated as objects of Western Poetics and Aesthetics for multiplying their value. As a result, Goryeo-sokyo studies have grown distant from the public in Korea and entered scholarly downturn.
Thus, this essay suggests that all the researchers, including me, should reflect on the reason why Goryeo-sokyo has to be studied and the way how it is examined, out of all the hypotheses and ideologies. Only when all the pieces of Goryeo-sokyo go back again, we can seek out their own values and contemporary values as well. For this, Goryeo-sokyo studies need more efforts to get rid of all the prejudices against Sokyo, to restore their real contexts and the contexts of all the literature related to them than before (“contextual study”). In this process, the grammar of the written Korean language and the usages of Korean vernaculars as well are preferentially considered, and the fact Goryeo was not poetry but song which had used for all the rites of court and central or local government and the fact all the music of all the dynasties in the history of the East had been made for a common goal, a peaceful world by changing all the people’s personalities into the worm, tender, and generous through it including poetry and song, and the fact that Goryeo-sokyo was the outcome of collaborative intelligence in the period of Goryeo dynasty, considering the very tune of the Saints and the reality of the people as well.
