일제강점기 금강산은 급진적 근대화가 이루어진 장소였다. 조선후기에 이미 정착된 금강산 여행 경로를 그대로 유지한 채, 말과 도보라는 전 근대적 모빌리티가 기차, 전철, 기선(汽船), 자동차 등 근대적 모빌리티로 바뀌어갔다. 총독부의 금강산 개발에서 식민지 조선 민중은 고려 대상이 아니었다. 그러나 이 시기 금강산은 조선 사람이라면 누구나 직접 보고, 몰입하고, 느끼고 싶어 하는 장소로 자리 잡는다. <동아일보>와 <조선일보>는 경쟁적으로 금강산에 관해 보도하고, 유명 작가의 여행기를 연재하며, 나아가 금강산 탐승단을 직접 운영했다. 이와 같은 행위 저변에는 민족적 자긍심 회복을 위해 구성원 모두가 금강산을 자세히 알고, 사랑하고, 직접 경험하자는 정당화가 자리잡고 있었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper explores the aspects of Mt. Geumgang reported in <the Dong-A Ilbo> and <the Chosun Ilbo> during the Japanese colonial period in the 1920s. During that time, Mt. Geumgang was rapidly modernized. While the previous travel route to Mt. Geumgang established in the late Joseon Dynasty was maintained, the pre-modern methods of mobility, that is, horses and walking, were replaced with modern forms such as electric trains, steam locomotives, steamboats, and automobiles. Concerning the development of Mt. Geumgang, the Japanese Government General did not consider Joseon seriously. Meanwhile, for the people of Joseon at that time, Mt. Geumgang had a meaning they wanted to see, be immersed in, and feel. <The Dong-A Ilbo> and <the Chosun Ilbo> competitively reported on Mt. Geumgang and serialized travel journals by famous writers, even operating group sightseeing tours to the mountain, respectively. Behind such actions, there was a growing justification that all citizens had to know, love, and experience Mt. Geumgang to restore national pride.
