This study examines the narrative aspects and author's consciousness in Geumgangyusanilgi, which describes the experience of climbing Mt. Geumgang in the 18th century during the Chosun Dynasty, with the aim of identifying the author.
After looking through the information about the author provided in the work, historical records and genealogy, the author was identified as Gwanje Lee.
This study highlighted narrative aspects such as objective and simple description of the objects and beautiful scenery, detailed explanations of climbing the rugged mountain, and a narration of emotional impact of absorbing the beautiful scenery.
The author did not view Mt. Geumgang as just an otherworldly place of fantastic beauty, but as one that straddles both the real and the fantastic world simultaneously. In other words, he regarded it as a place with contradictory characteristics.
I anticipate that this kind of discussion can deepen and expand the understandings of late Chosun era literature that deals with traveling experience.
