다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

(Background and Purpose) The common discourse suggesting that language and space can be interpreted in multiple ways depending on the environment and composition presents new possibilities for using linguistic perspectives to understand and study space. Therefore, this study aims to explore ways of understanding religious spaces based on the characteristics and usage of metonymy as a rhetorical expression, in society as witnessed in culture and religion. (Method) Four representative aspects were derived based on prior research in the fields of linguistics and rhetoric on metallurgy. These aspects were expanded on and linked to spatial languages that could be interchanged with space. Thus we propose figurative spatial structure as a framework for analyzing the cases of eight Eastern and Western religious architectural spaces to derive detailed components and formative characteristics, which would in turn be used for analyzing a Jongmyo. (Results) First, study summarizes how the characteristics of the metaphor contributes toward the formation of spatial structural meaning.
Enlargement can expand and transfer the meaning of the original concept through auxiliary concepts and link it to a symbolic combination structure by reminding the essential value of the space’s existence through the characteristics of symbol, combination, and mediation. The adjacency of a secondary space indirectly conveys the meaning and value of the space by continuously guiding the speaker's gaze and converting various visual elements into a continuous visual structure. Third, as a group of coincidental symbols, the vocabulary used to convey a metaphorical expression could be interpreted as a complex stacked structure because it helps grasp the meaning of the implied and complex layers of societal relationships formed through random and accidental symbols. Fourth, symmetric reciprocal transition comprises words that can be interchanged with auxiliary and circular ideas of the same weight. Additionally, it should be able to transfer meaning and link space with an equilibrium substitution structure. The Jongmyo, that was analyzed based on these concepts, is a space where the political situation and religious meaning of the Chosun Dynasty are combined to project the infinite world of the dead through a series of figurative expressions that are both religious and symbolic. (Conclusions) The characteristics of the metaphor remind people of the universal meaning of traditional religious spaces, including Jongmyo, while simultaneously suggesting a structural direction to dismantle its hidden meaning. Therefore, these characteristics are significant for expanding the perspective for analyzing religious spaces, and shows the potential for how traditional and modern spaces can be diversified beyond religious spaces in conjunction with linguistic characteristics.
