본 논문은 한말 영남의 유학자들이 서구문화를 수용함에 있어서 그들의 학문적 배경인 퇴계학과 신사조의 관계를 사상적으로 어떻게 정리하였는지에 관한 고찰이다. 특히 퇴계학맥을 계승하였지만 동시에 서구수용을 주장했던 인물들이 제시한 이론적인 모델은 어떤 것이었는지, 그리고 그 과정에서 퇴계학 자체는 어떠한 내용적 변용을 거쳤는지에 관한 고찰이다.
이를 위하여 한말 영남의 대표적 퇴계학맥인 정재학파와 한주학파, 그리고 양 학파가 배출한 대표적 서구수용론자인 안동의 유인식과 고령의 이인재를 비교하였다. 정재학파와 한주학파의 학문경향, 두 사람에게 서구수용의 방법론을 제시한 신채호 및 장지연과의 관계, 그리고 이러한 배경 위에서 형성된 두 사람의 서구수용론의 특징과 변법자강른의 전개 과정을 분석하였다. 분석에 있어서 필자는 변화에 관한 그들의 생각에 주목하였고, 양자의 서구수용론의 차이는 '불변'과 '변통'의 상관관계에서 불변적 가치의 본질을 무엇으로 보는가에 달려있음을 확인하고 이를 중점적으로 논하였다.
이인재의 경우 한주학파 자체가 '변통'에 개방적이었을 뿐 아니라 '불변'을 유교적 가치에 두는 장지연의 변법자강론을 모델로 하였으므로 그에 있어서 퇴계학과 신사조는 연속성을 가졌던 반면, 유인식의 경우는 정재학파가 '변통'에 대해 소극적이었으며 '불변'을 민족정신사에서 찾는 신채호의 변법자강론을 모델로 하였으므로 양명학과 율곡학까지 포용한 대신 퇴계학과의 연계성은 약한 것이 특징이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims at the study on the methodological models that were presented by Toegye school with regard to the reception of the western thoughts in the 19th and the early 20th century. This author laid the emphasis on their viewpoint of connecting the two different ideas, and the variation in the theory of Toegye's philosophy in that process.
For this study, the author compared two the most influential schools in Yeungnam district that divided from the lineage of Toegye's philosophy, and two the most typical scholars from each school at that time. They are Liu In-Sik(柳寅植, 1865-1928) and Lee In-Jae(李寅梓, 1870-1929). And the author studied the learning tendency of two schools, the relationship with the theorists who transfered the methodologies to them, and the remarkable assertions by two scholars in the receiving the western civilization. The major criteria in this study were their conceptions about 'the unchangeable and 'the changeable' in history.
In case of Lee, the learning tendency of his school was not only open to change, but he succeeded to the assertions of the theorist who put 'the unchangeable' within the confudan values. On the other side, in case of Liu, the learning tendency of his school was negative to change, and he succeeded to the assertions of the theorist who expended 'the unchangeable' to the through values in korean history.
