본 논문은 퇴계철학의 영향 하에서 성립한 율곡철학의 차이점을 조명한 것이다. 율곡철학은 퇴계철학에 관한 근본적인 성찰을 전제하기 때문에 명확히 이해하기에는 적지 않은 어려움이 따른다.
퇴계와 율곡의 철학은 리기심성에 대한 이론적 논거를 바탕으로 성립되었다. 리기 심성에 대한 논의는 그것이 이미 인간의 행위를 포함하는 한에 있어서 사변적인 이론의 영역에 한정되지 않는다. 그것은 도덕과 윤리의 실현을 위한 구체적인 행위실천을 지시하는 마음의 수양공부까지 함축한다. 그러므로 퇴계와 율곡과 같은 성리학자들에게 있어서 리기심성과 같은 사변적 논의는 기본적으로 인간의 선한 본성을 일상적 삶의 세계에서 어떤 방식으로 보존하면서 확충할 수 있는가에 대한 방법론의 모색이라고 할 수 있다. 성리학에서 리기심성론을 지속적으로 거론하는 이유도 이것이 인간의 도덕법칙과 윤리적 행위를 담보하는 심성의 문제를 보다 명확하게 이해하기 위한 방법론이기 때문이다.
퇴계와 율곡의 철학체계에서 리기심성론은 경험적인 우주 자연의 변화 · 운동을 규명하기 위한 방법론으로 제기되었을 뿐만 아니라, 더욱 중요한 점은 인간의 심리현상 에 대하여 보다 논리적이고 정합적인 설명을 위한 준거틀을 모색하는 과정에서 성립되었다는 점이다. 특히 율곡은 우주와 존재의 근원을 탐구하는 리기에 대하여 적확한 식견을 갖지 못한다면 다양한 인간의 심리현상을 다루는 심성의 문제에 대해서도 올바르게 이해할 수 없다고 지적한다.
율곡철학에서 존재에 대한 근본적 이해라고 할 수 있는 리기심성론은 퇴계철학의 연장선에 있다. 즉 퇴계의 리기심성론에 대한 수용과 비판이라는 재해석을 통하여 율곡 리기섬성론의 체계가 마련된다. 이러한 점에서 논자는 리기호발 · 주리주기의 문제를 포함한 퇴계철학에 대한 비판적 분석과 재해석을 통해서 율곡의 철학적 입장을 구 명하고자 한다. 이는 결국 퇴계의 철학에 대한 해명을 통해서 율곡철학을 이해하려는 시도이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper is to explicate the modes of differentiation of Yulgok's philosophy based on the differential process of Toegye's philosophy. It is difficult to understand Yulgok's philosophy for it presupposes the radical reflection on the essence of Toegye's philosophy.
Toegye and Yulgok's philosophies was constituted on the theoretical basis of argument on the theory of Liqixinxing. As far as the discourse of the Liqixinxing, it is not limited to the part of the speculative theory. It implies propriety practice that refers the concrete practice for realization of moral and ethics and mind study. Therefore, As for Neo-Confucians such as Toegye and Yulgok, all speculative remarks are like methodological search that how can human beings realize it in the real world without destroying the nature of morality endowed from the heaven. In Neo-Confucianism, theory of Liqixinxing is mentioned repeatedly for it is the methodology for explaining the human nature and mind.
In Toegye and Yulgok's philosophical system, the theory of Liqixinxing was raised as a methodological theory for the elucidation of the change and movement of the experiential universe and nature. More importantly, the theory was also organized in the course of groping the criterion for a better theoretical and appropriate explanation about human psychological phenomenon. Especially, Yulgok points out that if human beings do not possess an accurate view on the theory of Liqi that search for the source of the universe and existence, they can not gain right comprehension on the matter of human nature(Xinxing) that deals with various psychological phenomenon of human beings as well.
The theory of Liqixinxing, fundamental understanding on existence from the point of Yulgok's philosophy, lies on the extensional line about Toegye. In other words, such reinterpretation as acceptance and criticism on Toegye's theory of Liquxinxing provides Yulgok's theory of Liqixinxing ststem.
Accordingly I endeavors to manifest Yulgok's philosophical standpoint by means of critical analysis and reinterpretation on Toegye's theory(including Liqihyfa, Zhulizhuqi). In its effect, this effort can be viewed as an attempt to understand Yulgok from the Toegye's philosophy.
