본 논문은 조선 중기에 성리학을 심화시킨 퇴계의 철학을 리의 능동성 문제를 중심으로 하여 인간학적 측면에서 고찰한 것이다. 이것은 퇴계의 리기론을 그 실천적 전개와 관련하여 이해한 것을 의미한다.
퇴계의 철학사상이 심화되기 시작한 것은 정지운의 천명도와 도설을 수정하면서부터인데, 이러한 수정을 통하여 퇴계는 자신의 철학적 기반을 마련하였다. 이것은 주자의 초월적인 리 중심의 사유틀로부터 인간의 주체적이고 내재적인 리를 위주로 하는 철학적 단초를 마련하여 계기가 되었고, 이러한 그의 철학적 사유는 기대승과 8년동안 사단과 칠정에 관한 논변과정을 통하여 더욱 발전되어 나갔다.
퇴계는 리가 사회의 질서를 유지시켜주는 원리로서 사회적 관계에서 물아(物我)에 동시에 내재된 것으로 이해하여, 자아를 버리고 사물에 있어서의 리를 쫓는다든가 사물의 리를 자아 속으로 끌어들이는 양극단을 피한다. 그는 '리도설'에 이르기 전까지는 사물의 리를 법칙적인 것으로 봄으로써 심리(心理)와 물리(物理)를 구분하면, 특히 물리를 기에의해 제약된 분수리(分殊)의 특성을 갖는 것으로 파악하였지만, '리도설'에서는 물아(物我)의 리가 하나로 융합됨으로써 기의 제약을 벗어나 윤리적 최고 원리로서 절대성을 확보한다. 이 때 리는 태극의 능동성과 같은 의미로 이해된다. 결과적으로 말해, 퇴계의 리는 사회의 보편적인 도덕이념으로 현실세계에서 구현해야할 이상적 차원이라 할 수 있는데, 그가 말한 리발과 리동은 이상과 현실을 소통시킬 수 있는 통로인 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This treatise is a product of the intention to explicate Toigye's Neo-Confucianism in the light of philosophical anthropology. In other words this requires an understanding of the system on which his theory of Li-Chi is constructed and its practical application.
Toigye begins by developing his philosophy in accordance with the revision of Cheng chi yun's diagram of heaven's decree and views dealing with it. Through this work he diverts from the main frame of Zhu Xi's thought which emphasizes the transcendemtal principle, and focuses his attention rather on the moral principle which is inherent in man. He reinforces this concern through a prolonged discussion with Ki Daesunng with respect to the Four-Seven debate.
Toigye's theory of administration emphasize the inner moral cultivation of the classes which control political affairs. This rightly implies a tracing back to the fact that they are rather inclined to immoral conduct than conform to Li they themselves have established. Toigye believes that Li is the principle which preserves the social order and avoids that scholars abandon Li of the subject and follow Li of the object, or draw Li of the object into the fund. Before he built up a theory whereby the Principle operate itself, he regarded Li of the object as a fixed principle which is distinguished from Li of the mind. In other words he looks upon Li of the object which possesses the characteristics of the specialized which is restricted to Chi. But in the theory that the principle operates itself, he ensures that according as Li of the subject and that of the object are combined into one. Li which escapees from the restriction of Chi becomes the ethical supreme principle satisfying objectivity and certainty. Thus Li is understood in the same sense as the spontaneity of Great Ultimate as the origin from which all things come into being.
In result, Toigye's Li can be ideal dimension as a social, universal idea which we must accomplish through conquest of the immoral reality.
