한국의 근대 초기 교과서류와 신문·잡지의 기사 등은 서양에 대한 정보를 백과전서식으로 전달한다. 이들 기록물을 통해 근대화를 서구화와 동일시하였던 1920년대의 지식인들은 유학 등을 통해 서양을 직접 여행한 기록을 잡지에 게재함으로써 독자들로 하여금 정보와 체험을 대조하게 한다. 박승철의 유럽 기행문은 이러한 맥락에서 생산되었다. 박승철은 유럽행 선박에서 근대적 규율과 일상을 경험한 후, 아시아 지역을 철저히 대상화한다. 근대문명과 전통문화를 일종의 우열관계로 파악하여 일본·조선/아시아 지역을 구획함으로써 자신의 '국제문명인'으로서의 위치를 표나게 의식한다. 그리고 독일에서 거주 경험을 바탕으로 서양 내부 역시 도시화, 공업화 그리고 문화 향유 정도에 따라 위계화 한다. 이로써 근대문명인(서구인)/동양인/식민지 주민이라는 위계를 만들어내고, 이로부터 식민지 지식인의 분열이 드러난다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The various kinds of textbooks and articles of newspapers and magazines, in the early modern of Korea, had delivered the encyclopedic information about the Occident upon students and readers. The modernization were understood as Occidentalizaion at that time. The Occident, therefore, was just the object of education and enlightenment. So intellectuals had learned the Occident by those and traveled over Europe and America. The abroad travel literature of Park, Seung Chul was written in this context.
Park, in the ship to Europe, experienced the universal rules of cosmopolitan city and so put the Asia on show. It means that he tried to recognize himself as the international civilized man. So as compared with Japan-Korea in his consciousness, Asia was a backward region. And he graded European nations for their industrial technology and cultural level. Consequently he made the regional grade that is the modern civilized man(an Occidental)/an Oriental/a colony, and so spoke for his disruption and wound as a colony.
