공재 윤두서는 조선 중기(약1550-1700)와 조선후기(1700-1850)가 교체되던 전환기에 활동하였던 선비화가이다.
본 논문은 동양회화에 있어 다루어지는 여러 화목 중 인물화 부분에서 뛰어난 기량을 발휘한 공재 윤두서의 작품연구로서 그가 그린 여러 작품의 인물화를 통해 작품의 우수성과 그의 예술성 그리고 나아가 후세에 미친 영향에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 즉 현대에 이르러서도 인물화라는 화목 자체는 작가들로 하여금 소재의 매력을 충분히 이끌며 인간의 다양한 내면세계(內面世界)와 현실세계와 현실세계를 가장 잘 표현할 수 있도록 하는 매개성(介媒性)을 지니고 있기 때문에 당시의 작화형태(作畵形態)나 배경 등을 통해 표현방법과 그에 따른 발전과정을 알 수 있다.
18세기 조선후기의 회화예술 중에는 초상화, 풍속화가 유행하여 발전을 거듭하고 있었다. 따라서 소위 예술성에 있어서 뛰어난 작가와 탁월한 작품들이 적지 않았다고 보이며 그런 결과 선대에 전존(傳存)한 예술성으로 가치 높은 작품으로 하여금 공재 윤두서가 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 그것은 전통을 흡수하면서도 중국의 화풍을 주체적으로 수용하여 발전시킨 그의 기량과 신분을 배제한 그의 작화형태에 있으며 그로 인한 새로운 화풍의모색이 있었기 때문이다. 따라서 공재 윤두서는 조선시대 회화사에서 한 획을 그을 만큼 중요한 인물이며 그의 예술세계가 후세에 미친 영향 또한 크다고 볼 수 있다.
공재 윤두서는 조선시대 회화사의 양식적 분류상으로 조선중기에서 조선 후기로 넘어서는 전환기적 시대의 사람이다. 조선시대 중기는 임진왜란과 병자호란을 거치면서 사회, 문화적으로 매우 혼란한 시기였다. 이 시기의 혼란으로 인하여 사회구조에 있어서 서민의식의 성장과 이에 따른 신분질서의 혼란은 사대부가 발전시킨 성리학과 실학사상이 결합되는 계기가 되기도 하였다.
실학사상은 당시 사회의 현실적인 문제들을 대상으로 연구하는 풍조를 낳게 하였고, 그것이 회화에도 반영이 되어 사실주의를 바탕으로 하는 화풍을 만들어 가는 밑거름이 되었다. 이에 따라 공재 윤두서는 선비화가로서 당시의 배경을 안고 산수화, 인물화, 마화, 풍속화에 이르기까지 폭 넓게 작업을 이루어 냈으며 이러한 여러 작품 속에서 시대적 상황을 바탕으로 한 사실주의 경향들은 그의 인물화에서 나타난다. 또한 중국을 통해 전해들어온 사실주의 기법을 통해 그것을 수용하고 변용한 기법적인 면에서도 두각을 보였다.
전문적으로 화업(畵業)의 길을 가지 않은 사대부 출신임에도 불구하고 전통적인 초상화의 양식에 그의 사실주의 양식을 결합하여 인물들을 표현하였고, 그런 인물들의 실제 감을 높여주기 위한 구성과 섬세함을 그의 뛰어난 기교로 당시에는 그러한 표현을 볼 수 없었던 섬세함을 그의 인물화에서 보여주고 있으며 자신의 위치와는 대조 적으로 서민들에게 눈을 돌려 풍속화를 그리는 일에도 역량을 발휘하였다.
그의 자화상 속에서 나와 있는 구성법과 세밀함은 그의 사실주의적 예술세계를 반영함과 동시에 내면세계까지 들어나 있으며 다른 초상화에서는 전통의 표현양식을 따라 추모의 정과 함께 성격묘사에 치중하여 제작하기도 하였고, 본인의 애정으로 그려낸 여러 도상들과 풍속화들에서는 역시 전통을 답습하고 발전시켜 회화에서의 본질인 현실을 담아내려고 애를 썼다.
이처럼 당시의 시대적 배경 속에서 본인 의지와 애정을 인물화라는 화목 위에 표출하여 새로운 화풍을 창조하고 계승하였음은 물론 그것은 현대에 와서도 그가 보여준 기량에 반할 언급이 없을 정도로 뛰어난 예술성이라 할 수 있고 그만이 갖은 독특한 특징이라 할 수 있다.
과거 조선시대나 현대에서도 인물화라는 화목은 여러 화목으로 분류 될 수 있는 장르지만, 그것의 본질에는 변화가 없듯이 대상을 표현하는데 있어 외형만이 아닌 정신세계를 표현해야 하고 생동감을 주어야 비로써 예술적으로 높은 가치를 이룰 수 있다.
이와 같이 예술적으로 큰 가치의 작품을 만들어 내기위해서는 대상에 대한 심오한 관찰과 애정이 있어야 하고 그것을 바탕으로 표현할 수 있는 기량이 있어야 한다. 이러한 점에서 그가 보여준 작품들은 그의 예술성을 최고의 가치로 이끌며 발전시켰고 후대의 회화발전에 있어서 중요한 역활로 많은 영향을 미쳤다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Yun Du-seo was remarkably excellent in figure painting among a variety of painting genres in oriental paintings. this study is designed to determine of his works but also his artistry and to shed light on the influences of his painting on his predecessors as figure paintings are attractive enough to appeal to artists and act as a vehicle to express the inner world ant the world of reality, there is a need for identifying the packgroiuid or figure paintings at his times ta order to explore his expressional tneinodology and developrn process.
One should make profound observations of objects, have strong affection for them be possessed of appropriately expressive skills to produce artistically valuable works. In this respect, Yun Du-seo's figure paintings brought own artistry into stark relief, influencing the present world of art.
ln the latter period of the Joseon Dynasty of the 18th century, portrait and genre painting were prevailing in art sector. These types of painting made a continuing progress at that time and Gonjae Yun do-seo was one of the forerunners who fueled their progress, thanks to his unique style of portraying figures, outstanding capability and realistic expression.
He is one of the most important painters who opened a new chapter for painting in the Joseon Dynasty, and had a huge impact on his next generations.
Gongjae yun Du-seo's painting style could be called that of the transitional period from the middle term of the Joseon Dynasty to its latter one. In the middle term, the nation was thrown into extreme confusion due to two severe wars. And the awakening of the grass roots and ensuing disorder of socal classes brought great changes to social structure, and such changes and chaos served as a chance to combine metaphysics(Seongrihak) and practical science(Silhak) that were developed by noblemen.
The practical science led his eontemporary people to turn their eyes into social issues in the real world, and paved the way for instilling realism in painting. As a scholar and painter, Yun Du-seo handled a wide range of painting including landscape, figure, animal and genre painting, and his figure paintings leaned realism according to the pervasive trend in his days.
Although he wasn't a professional painter as one of noblemen, he added realistic style to traditional portrait when he depicted figures, and his outstanding skills, composition and expression style to put animation into figures instilled delicacy into his works, which couldn't be found in other painters works at that time. And despite his social standing, he paid attention to commoners and was good at popular painting as well.
His self-portrait characterized by unique composition and minuteness represented his realistic world of art, and there was an unprecedented sophistication and remarkable technique in it, Sometimes he drew portraits in a traditional fashion, and various paintings that he yielded with affection, including popular ones, were well-grounded in tradition and at the same time, he tried to take it to another level to precisely depict realities, which were the core nature of painting.
Thus, ho created new style of painting by drawing figure paintings with affection, and there is no doubt his superb capability and remarkable artistry.
In the Joseon Dynasty or modern hires figure painting could he classified into different parts, but its nature always remains unchanged Figure painting could be called a genuine work of art only when it represents rnentai world and is full at htes To do that it's nened to make a profound observation of figures to be described with affection, and there should be an ability to express what's observed. In this sense, Yun Du-seo's figure painting contributed to creating his unmatched world of art, and he exerted a great influence on painting in the next generation
