(Abstract)
The purpose of this study was to review the mountain travelling culture through 『Sanjungilgi』(山中日記) by Jeong Shi-han(丁時翰, 1625~1707) who is a retired gentleman in the mountains, in other words, a hermit scholar and other travel sketches. 『Sanjungilgi』 that he left as a hermit scholar is the extended travel sketch recording his travel in mountains and rivers below Mountain Geumgang.
He is seen as the successor of Toigye criticizing Yulgok as a scholar who enjoyed his rural life and reading as a gentleman in the mountains.
In 『Sanjungilgi』 by Jeong Shi-han Mountain travelling is shown as making it a habit to read and travel mountain, appreciating beautiful mountains and rivers, cultivating the mind, perceiving and praising traditional culture and human relationship based on praise and courtesy.
When we compare, analyze, and review the mountain travelling culture of the contemporary people and its meaning through 『Sanjungilgi』, we come to perceive the correlation between the mountain travelling and reading, improve the scholastic mind through moral cultivation, realize the importance of the national land and propose desirable image of human beings.
If we look into the meaning of 『Sanjungilgi』 in the history of literature, it has the characteristics of travelling sketch and diary at the same time. If it is extended, it becomes the travelling sketch of the contemporary people in the 17th century and a model that represents their mountain travelling sketch at the same time. It records reading record, friendship based on courtesy and the contemporary culture extensively.
This article discussed the mountain travelling culture of the contemporary people through 『Sanjungilgi』 by Jeong Shi-han, who was a hermit scholar in the 17th century. If we want to understand the mountain travelling culture of our ancestors, we should not restrice our study to the 17th century. We can understand various kinds of mountain travelling culture and identify the meaning in the history of literature only when we compare and analyze all the mountain travelling literature. It shall remain the task of future scholars.
