‘정치적 올바름’을 신봉하는 사람들은 고전동화에서 발견되는 이데올로기적 편견과 차별을 불편하게 여기며, 그중 일부는 고전동화의 ‘부적절한’ 언어를 ‘정치적으로 올바름’을 반영하는 방향으로 고쳐야 하고, 필요에 따라서는 일부 고전동화를 아이들의 독서목록에서 제외할 필요가 있다고 믿는다. 제임스 핀 가너의 『정치적으로 올바른 베드타임 스토리』는 몇몇 고전동화를 개작하여 그러한 교조주의적 반응에 일침을 가한다. 이 작품에 관한 연구와 비평은 주로 가너의 개작이 지닌 풍자적 특징이 복잡하게 뒤얽힌 수사적·문학적 요소에 의해 어떻게 활성화되는지에 주목한다. 본 논문은 기존의 연구 성과를 폭 넓게 수용하면서 ‘정치적 올바름’을 잣대로 고전동화를 재단하여 일괄적으로 폄훼하고 그 언어와 서사를 작위적으로 바꾸는 것은 교육적으로 역효과를 낳는다고 주장한다. ‘정치적 올바름’은 대중적 컨센서스를 온전히 획득하지 못한 유동적인 개념이다. 가너가 작품에 제시한 ‘정치적으로 올바른’ 어휘들은 대개 완곡어법이나 가치 중립적이고 객관적인 모양새를 띠는데, 그런 유의 언어는 오용의 유혹과 정치적 편향에 취약할뿐더러 역사적 현실을 왜곡할 수 있다. 짐짓 ‘정치적으로 올바른’ 작품의 서사 역시 유사한 교육적 문제를 유발한다. 각 이야기의 시대착오적인 얼개는 과거와 현재의 경계를 허물면서 하나의 편견이 ‘정치적 올바름’이라는 이름 아래 또 따른 편견으로 치환됨을 보여주며, 인생과 배움에서 중요한 건 현재일 뿐이라는 인식을 독자들에게 심어준다. ‘정치적 올바름’이 도그마화하면 검열의 수단으로 전락한다. 고전동화를 있는 그대로 아이들에게 읽힐 때 얻는 교육적 이득이 그렇게 하지 않을 때보다 훨씬 크다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Some staunch followers of political correctness find the ideological bigotries and discriminating elements present in classic fairy tales uncomfortable. They believe that the unsavory language in those stories should be modified in ways that reflect political correctness; they even go as far as to insist on the expurgation of those stories from children’s reading lists. James Finn Garner’s Politically Correct Bedtime Stories, a satiric retelling of the fairy tales, is a hilarious counterattack on its dogmatic response. Appropriating the existing scholarship that underscores the rhetorical and literary complexity involved in the sarcastic nature of this book, this paper examines the negative consequences of such a categorical denigration of traditional fairy tales. Political correctness is a slippery concept, and diction is inherently political. Politically correct language often takes the form of euphimisitic or seemingly value-neutral expressions. When applied to fairy tales, this obscures and distorts historical realities because it is vulnerable to corruption, both potentially and practically. The same is true for Garner’s deliberate re-visioning of the original plot. The anachronistic plotting of each story blurs the line of demarcation between past and present, thus imbuing the reader with the misleading idea that only the present counts in life and learning. We can find traces of political bias and discrimination in traditional fairy tales. Nevertheless, they are not stories about political bias and discrimination. As such, the politically incorrect parts of these stories should be allowed to remain as they are. It is far more educational to leave this matter to critics, as fairy tales are like cultural artifacts displayed in a museum: pieces of historical significance that provide invaluable insight into the past.
