본 연구의 목적은 역사적 시간과 지리적 공간의 관점에서 한국 (탈)근대 지역의 형성, 유지, 변화를 이론적으로 설명하고, 현재 지역이 당면하고 있는 문제를 해결하는데 도움을 줄 수 있는 개념적 틀을 발전시키는 것이다. 이를 위해 논의된 이론은 식민지-탈식민지론, 지방자치, 사회적 자본, 지역 정치생태학이다.
일제 식민지는 식민지 지배 논리와 함께 서구 근대 사상과 산업 자본주의를 한반도에 이식시킴에 따라 조선 왕조 체제 하에서 수립된 전근대적 지역 공간의 사회, 경제, 정치 체제를 근본적으로 변화시켰다. 식민지-탈식민지론에 대한 연구 주제는 지역을 초월한 국가 혹은 세계 공간 규모에서 작동하는 요인에 대한 것과 근대 지역 형성에 구체적으로 작동한 요인에 대한 것을 다루었다. 1980년대 중반이후 한국과 세계 정치, 경제가 급격히 변화하면서 새로운 환경에 능동적으로 적응할 수 있는 지역 통치 방식이 요청되었다. 지방 자치제에 대한 기존 연구는 지방자치 이론, 중앙과 지방 정부의 관계, 시민사회, 지역 경제 개발 등의 주제를 다루었다.
사회적 자본(social capital)이란 생물학적 요인, 교육 등에 의해 개별적 인간에게 축적된 인적 자본(human capital)과는 달리 지속적인 사회 관계에 의해 만들어지는 집단적 자원(혹은 자산)이다. 사회적 자본은 자연적으로 주어진 것이 아니라 사회 구성원들의 자발적 모임, 중앙과 지방 정부의 적극적 지원 정책 등을 통해 형성, 유지된다. 지방 정부와 시민 사회의 신뢰적이고 호혜적 관계가 지역 사회에 수립되면 사회적 자본의 형성, 유지가 가능할 것이며, 이것은 지역 경제 발전에 긍정적인 역할을 할 것이다. 정치 생태학(political ecology)은 생태학과 정치경제학의 관점을 결합하여 자연과 사회의 상호 관계를 변증법적으로 연구하는 것이다. 정치생태학에 대한 기존 연구는 생태계에 대한 새로운 이해, 자연과 사회의 상호 작용을 이해하는 이론과 방법론의 발전, 역사적 시간 등을 강조하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim of this study is to develop a theoretical framework of explaining the remaking of a modernized region in the South Korea in terms of a historical and spatial perspective. The theories discussed are colonial - postcolonialism, local autonomic government, social capital, and regional political ecology.
The Japanese colonial regime had basically changed the social, economic, and political system established under the Choson Dynasty through the introduction of modern thought and industrial capitalism of the Western society as well as the logic of its colonial regime. The various factors operated either on a national and global scale or on a regional scale were discussed under the theory, colonial - postcolonialism. The theory of local government, the relationship between local and central government, and regional economic development were studied under local autonomic government.
Social capital is a social - or group - oriented resource different from human capital accumulated in an individual human being. It is not naturally given, but created and sustained by a voluntary meeting of social members, active policies of local and central government, and so on. It also takes a positive role of developing a regional economy. Political ecology is to dialectically study the interactions of nature and human society through a conceptual framework of combining ecology and political economy. Various subjects, new understanding of ecology, theoretical and methodological development of understanding an interaction of nature and society, historical perspective have been studied under political ecology.
