아우구스티누스의 『고백록』에 기원을 둔 서구의 자전문학은 서구 특유의 고유한 문학 양식으로 인식된 적도 있었다. 하지만 동양문화권 내에서도 자전문학의 존재와 그 역사적 변화상에 대한 인식과 함께 그 연구 성과 또한 활발하게 제출되었다. 동아시아 문학사의 전통 속에서 자전문학이 어떠한 성격과 특징을 지니며 변화해 왔는지를 살펴보는 작업은 앞으로 해명해야 할 과제이다. 여기에서는 조선후기 자전문학의 중요한 성과를 평가될 수 있는 孝田沈魯崇(1762-1837)의 사례를 집중적으로 살펴보고자 한다. 심노숭은 자기의 삶을 서사화하는 데에 특별한 관심을 가졌다. 그는 매우 상세하게 자신의 삶을 기록하였으며, 또한 다양한 형식을 활용함으로써 자전적 글쓰기의 실험을 모색했다. 심노숭은 자전적 글쓰기 방식에 있어서 장편 형태의 서술방식을 주로 선호했는데, 自撰年譜 형식 이외에 주제별 분류 방식을 새롭게 채택하여 자기 삶을 다각적으로 증언하고자 하였다. 더 나아가 심노숭은 사건과 행적을 단순히 나열하는 통상적인 자전문학의 서술 방식에 그치지 않고 자신의 내면과 심리를 진지하게 성찰했으며, 숨기고 싶은 비밀이나 자신의 결점과 단점까지도 스스럼없이 토로하였다. 주제별로 구획하여 자기를 이야기하는 방식은 종래 자전문학의 형식과는 매우 다르다는 점에서 주목된다. 심노숭의 자전문학에 나타난 자아상은 진실한 인간적 면모를 지닌다. 희노애락의 자기 감정을 진솔하게 표현하였으며, 자신의 과오와 결점을 드러내 보이고 이성에 관한 개인의 은밀한 욕망까지도 숨김없이 토로했다. 또한 불우한 문인지식인으로서의 자기 모습을 그려보이기도 하고, 때로는 당대의 시대 상황을 예리한 시선으로 증언하고자 하는 목격자의 모습을 띠기도 하였다. 미셸 푸코에 따르면 근대적 주체는 내밀한 욕망의 고백을 통해 진정한 자기를 인식하며, 동시에 고백을 통해 사회의 금기를 스스로 받아들임으로써 자기를 구축해나간다. 심노숭의 자아상은 그 같은 근대적 개인의 자기 고백을 향한 도정 위에 서 있었다고 생각된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to investigate autobiographical literature of Sim No-sung. He was concerned about autobiographical writings. Sim No-sung made attempt to innovate new writing style in Jajeosilgi and Jajeoginyon. These two books is representative of his autobiographies. Jajeoginyon was arranged in a chronological order. This book was his own chronology. Jajeosilgi was unusual autobiographical literature. This book was made up according to four topics. The topics was appearance, character, art and experience. This method of organizing was very unique attempt. And Sim No-sung expressed private and secret feelings, complicated mentalities and subjective desires in his autobiographical literature. He made attempt to write his own life with truthful narrative mode. It was similar to Rousseeau`s Les Confessions. It was a plain statement of fact without any coloring. He was tied up with self-censorship. Rather he refused self-censorship. First self image which was reflected in his autobiographical writings was human-like figures. He did not hide his human weaknesses, shortcomings and sexual desires. He was someone who admits his shortcomings. Second self image in his autobiographical writings was unsuccessful writer. In spite of his talents he has regarded him as an unfortunate intellectual. He did not get ahead in the world and he was sent into exile by his political rivals. He was exiled to a far-off land. And third self image in his autobiographical writings was an eyewitness. He has witnessed a realty of his age. He has described his times as an honest reporter. Jajeosilgi and Jajeoginyon is important texts within autobiographical literature in the late Joseon dynasty because inner confession and feelings was well expressed in two books. The value of his autobiographical literature was characteristic self images and unique writing style.
