본 논문은 <운영전>의 등장인물과 구조를 중심으로 교육적 가치를 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 두산 출판사 문학교과서에 수록된 <운영전> 단원의 바람직한 구성 방안을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다.
최근에는 학습을 점검하거나 보충, 심화 학습이 체계적으로 이루어지도록 하기 위해 진단 및 형성 평가의 자료들이 교과서 속에 포함되는 경향이 많아지고 있다. 그리하여 본 논문은 교과서에 실린 소설 작품이 벗어나지 못하고 있는 문제점에 대한 검토가 필요하다는 판단 하에 연구를 진행하였다.
먼저 제1장에서는 연구목적과 기존연구의 검토를 했다. 그동안 <운영전> 연구는 많은 성과가 있었으나, 작품을 대상으로 한 교육방법론에 치우쳐 있었다. 고전으로서의 교육적 가치와 연결하여 교과서 구성 방안의 문제점을 지적한 연구는 미흡한 상태임에서 본 연구의 필요성을 제기하였다.
제2장에서는 <운영전>의 이해를 통해 <운영전>이 가지는 교육적 의의를 인물과 구조 중심으로 정리함으로써 교육의 초점을 밝혔다.
그 첫 번째로 등장인물이 가지는 자아의 주체성을 살펴보았다.
운영은 김 진사와의 만남을 통해 인간 본연의 감정인 사랑을 깨닫게 되고 그 사랑을 이루기 위해 단순한 죽음이 아닌 시대에 항거한 죽음을 선택하였다. 김 진사 또한 운영과의 만남을 위해 유교사회의 선비로서의 도를 뛰어넘는 주체적 의지를 보이고 있다.
다음으로 일반 몽유록과의 차이점과 액자구조를 바탕으로 구조가 가지는 교육적 의의를 살펴보았다.
<운영전>은 일반 몽유록과 달리 몽유자가 꿈속에서 이계(異界)에 들어 그곳의 시·공을 살다가 꿈에서 깨는 구조를 보여주고 있어 진보된 양상을 보이고 있다. 액자 구조는 특유의 기법임과 동시에 그들의 사랑이야기에 현실성을 부여하기 위한 작자의 의도적 장치임을 파악하였다.
제 3장에서는 <운영전>의 단원 구성의 실태와 문제점을 살펴보았다.
중학교 3학년 2학기 교과서의 경우 ‘보충․심화’의 역할을 하기에 실질적 학습이 이루어지지 않는다. 두산 문학교과서의 경우 부분 수록으로 인해 본문과 학습 활동의 연계성의 결여되어있어 실질적으로 학습 활동하기가 어려움을 문제점으로 지적하였다.
제 4장에서는 3장을 바탕으로 문학교과서의 개선방향을 살펴보고 이에 대한 개선점으로 교과서의 작품 선정 문제, 학습 목표, 부분 수록과 구성 문제를 살펴보았다.
또 <운영전>을 올바르게 학습하고 이해할 수 있는 바람직한 단원 구성 방향을 다음과 같이 제시하였다.
첫째, 작품 전체를 읽을 수 있는 계기가 되는 학습 목표를 설정해야 한다.
둘째, 인물의 특성과 갈등 관계를 파악할 수 있는 학습 활동이 설정되어야 한다.
셋째, <운영전>의 구조를 파악할 수 있는 활동이 설정되어야 한다.
넷째, 작품을 읽은 후 내면화하기 위한 활동이 필요하다.
교육과정이 개선됨에 따라 점차 자기 주도 학습과 학습자의 능동적인 활동을 강조하고 있어 교재는 갈수록 그 역할이 더욱 중요시 되고 있다. 미흡하나마 본 연구가 고전소설 교육의 방법론에 일조가 되기를 바란다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This research analyzes the educational value of the characters and plot of Tale of Unyeong and seeks to show a desirable composition strategy for the Tale of Unyeong unit in the literature textbook by Dusan Publishers.
There has been a growing trend to inspect the content of textbooks and to include in textbooks diagnoses and evaluations of said content for the purpose of systematically facilitating better-guided and more in-depth study.
Therefore, this study was undertaken while judging that a necessity exists to examine unresolved problems in the way novels are taught in educational textbooks.
First, in Chapter 1, the "purpose of the study" and "literature survey" show that while there have been many studies of Tale of Unyeong, these have weighed heavily in favor of educational methodologies, thus proving the need for this study. This need stems from an insufficiency of studies that point to the problems in textbook composition strategies insofar as they do not address the educational merits of the novel as a work of classical literature.
Chapter 2 elucidates on an educational focus of Tale of Unyeong through an understanding of it as a classical novel by organizing it in terms of the literary- historical significance of its characters and plot.
First, the characters were analyzed in terms of the subjectivities they possess.
Unyeong, through her encounter with Scholar Kim, comes to realize the natural human emotion called love, and in order to bring about that love, chooses a death that is not merely a death, but a death which defies the mores of her time. .
Through his encounter with Unyeong, Scholar Kim also exhibits subjective will that surpasses scholarly cultivation in Neo-Confucian society.

Next, the literary-historical significance of the work was shown, based in its differences from the standard "dream novel" (Mongyurok) and also in its "frame novel" structure.
Different from most "dream novel", the dreamer enters the strange world in the dream, lives in that time-space and awakens while in the dream, which represents an advanced narrative structure for its time.
The "frame" structure is both a unique narrative method and can be understood as a device employed intentionally by the author to lend realism to the love story.
Chapter 3 looks at the current state and problems of the composition of the Tale of Unyeong unit.
In the case of the middle school (3rd year 2nd semester) textbook, there were no actual study aids providing supplementary or in-depth information.
In the case of the Dusan literature textbook, because of the only partial inclusion of the text, there is a lack in connection between the original text and the content to be studied. This was pointed out as a hindrance to effective study of the novel by learners.
Chapter 4 studies what needs to be improved for the literature textbook based on chapter 3 and addresses problems on selecting subject, learning goal, supplement materials, and composition of the textbook.
Finally, the following guidelines were suggested to make the composition of the Tale of Unyeong unit more conducive to correct study and understanding.
First, a learning goal must be established allowing students the opportunity to read the entire work.
Second, a study method must be established allowing students to understand the characters and the struggles that exist between them.
Third, activities must be included allowing students to understand the plot of the novel.
Fourth, there is a need for activities allowing the students to internalize/reflect upon the work after reading it.
Together with improvements in educational curriculum is a gradual emphasis on self-guided study and assertive activities by the learners, and the role of text materials in this regard is coming to be seen as even more important.
Despite its limitations, it is hoped that this study will contribute to the instructional methodology of classical novels.
