인간의 삶에서 주된 관심 중 하나가 남녀 간의 애정에서 비롯되어 드러나는 본성적 욕망이다. 욕망과 호기심은 인간이 존재하는 한 영원히 지속될 것이며, 이 욕망 행위는 어떠한 고난이 닥쳐오더라도 극복하고자 하는 역동적 힘으로 작용한다.
그러나 때로는 그 욕망에 의해 드러나는 행위가 인간의 가장 모순된 점을 들춰내기도 한다. 그것은 다양한 형태를 가진 인간형들이 나타나게 되면서 더욱 두드러지는데, 우리는 이를 다 이해하고 설명하기 위해 문학이란 공간을 이용하였다. 그 안에서나마 모순을 극복하고 만족한 삶을 이루고자 했던 것이다.
우리의 고전 문학은 이러한 바탕에서 가장 한국적인 이미지와 정서를 드러내며, 남성우월주의 사회에서 나타나는 여성상, 절대 군주 세력 하에 펼쳐지는 남성상, 사회 계층 간의 갈등 등 봉건사회의 전면을 보여준다.
근래 들어 남성우월주의가 뿌리박힌 봉건사회에서 한국적인 여성상이 어떻게 표출되었는지를 확인하려는 문학 연구자들의 담론이 활발해졌다. 이는 고전문학이 억압의 대상이었던 여성의 목소리를 대변하는 역할을 담당하기도 했기 때문으로 보인다. 그러나 담론의 중심에는 여전히 여성과 남성이라는 성의 구분이 자리 잡고 있으며, 이를 남성주의적인 시각으로 바라보고 있음을 발견하게 된다.
<운영전>은 17세기 중세적 유교사상의 사회구조에서 이루어진 소설 이다. 그러나 <운영전>은 고소설이 가지고 있는 제반 특성들과는 다소 차이가 있다. 고전소설의 중심축을 이루던 <춘향전>에서 남녀 간의 사랑이 남성의 주도하에 결연이 되고, 결과적으로 교훈성을 포함하는 구조였다면, <운영전>은 이러한 한계점을 극복하고 있다.
<운영전>은 고소설에서 보여 주었던 시간과 공간을 초월하여, 조선조 당대 소설에서는 쉽게 볼 수 없었던 혁신적 비극성과 더불어 역사성까지도 갖추고 있다. 다양한 형태의 인물들을 통해 애정이 단지 흥밋거리의 소재가 아닌 자기애의 실현이며, 인간 내면의 본능적인 욕망과 관련되어 있는 자아의 모습임을 말해준다.
인간이 자신의 내부를 들여다보고 그 안에 잠재되어 있는 욕망을 깨닫는 일은 각성과 같은 일이다. 외부로부터 규정된 틀을 스스로 제거한다는 의미 또한 함께 지니게 되기 때문이다. 이는 인간이 가진 자의식의 표출, 다시 말해 주체성의 확립 과정을 추적하는 일이다. 필자는 이 변화 과정의 의미를 확장하여 근대성의 개념으로 규정하고자 했다. 또한 근대성을 자각하는 과정에서 드러나는 비극성의 극복에도 관심을 가져 보았다. 그래서 본고에서는 고전문학 <운영전>을 바라보던 기존의 관점에 새로운 문학관을 제시하고자 하였다.
따라서 본고의 논의는 여성의 주체성이 배제되었던 기존의 견해에 비켜서고자 했다. 이 작품을 통해 인간의 가장 근본적인 욕망의 가치를 규명하는 데 중점을 두고 전개해 보았다. 특히 절대 군주에 버금가는 안평대군의 영향권 안에 있던 궁녀 신분인 ‘운영’에 주목했으며, ‘김진사’와 ‘특’의 행보를 통해 인간 본성의 의미를 찾아보았다.
먼저 Ⅰ장에서는 연구목적과 기존연구를 검토하고, 연구방법과 범위에 대해 기술하였다.
Ⅱ장에서는 시대상황과 사회구조의 억압으로 인해 드러나는 남녀 간의 비극적인 사랑의 행로에서 근대성의 의의를 추출해 보았다. 또한 근대성을 확립해 가는 과정에서 수반되는 인간 본성의 자각과, 아울러 시대적 상황에서 비롯된 갈등으로 신분상승에 대한 인간의 야망과, 소외된 인물들에게서 드러나는 선악의 구조를 살폈다.
Ⅲ장에서는 두 인물이 스스로 선택한 죽음의 의미를 좀 더 면밀히 고찰하여 본 연구의 중심적 역할을 하게 하였다. 모순된 사회에 굴복하지 않고 자신들의 의지를 지키고자 죽음을 선택하게 되는 두 인물의 행위는 곧 그들을 비극에서 해방시키는 통로였음을 살펴보았다.
Ⅳ장은 죽음으로 인해 확장되는 세계에서 작가의 이상과 만나보고자 하였다. 작가는 작중에 제시하였던 문제의 해결점들을 작품의 결말 부분에 은밀한 이미지로 드러내고 있다. 주인공을 비극에서 해방시킴으로써 작가의 근대성을 지향하는 이념이 구현됐다고 보는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The main interest in human life is the instinctive desire that comes from love between female and male. This desire will never disappear as mankind exists. It will stimulate the nature of human being and also work as the active power to overcome all the hardships that will face with throughout all life.
However human behavior from the these desires sometimes exposures the most discrepant point of human being. It has been more conspicuous as various types of people appear. People have made use of literature in order to explain and understand these symptom. People have tried to get over these discrepancies and accomplish satisfactory life through literature.
Korean classical literature has also disclosed the image and sentiment of Korea and exposed the whole surface of feudal social system such as feminity in male chauvinistic society, masculinity in an absolute monarchic society, discords among different classes.
Recently there has been active discussion and study that have tried to find how Korean feminity in deep rooted male chauvinistic society has been exposed in Korean classic literature. That is because classic literature seemed to represent voices of female, object of suppression in feudal society. There is still distinguishment of gender at the hub of discussions, but unfortunately it is found that every discussion is seen from a male-centric view.
The novel Unyoung-jeon was written in infrastructure of medieval confucian ideas in 17th century. But it has different characteristics compared to other classic novels. Unyoung-jeon, novel of court lady Unyoung is considered to overcome the limits, male-centric and instructive structure that general classical novel such as Chunhyang-jeon, the centerpiece of classical love story has.
<Unyoung-jeon> transcends time and space and has revolutionary tragic and historical natures that can not be shown in other classic novels of Chosun dynasty. It says that love is not lowbrow story but the realization of self-esteem and the shape of oneself related with instinctive desires of human being.
It is the great awakening that man looks in to oneself to attain spiritual enlightenment of his unconscious desires. Because it also means that man gets rid of all frames of life from the outside by himself. This is also a matter of expression of self-consciousness, which is tracing the course of establishment of identity. I hereby stipulate this as modernity by enlarging the meaning of the process of changes. I showed interests in overcoming tragedy seen in the process of realizing modernity as well. Hence I finally try to suggest new prospective to existing point of view about classic novel "Unyoung-Jeon"
This study is focused on the female subjectivity which has been excluded in other Korean classic works and seeks to get to the heart of value of the most basic desires of human being. Especially it pays attention to status of a court lady "Unyoung" within the power of royal prince "Anpyung" and seeks for the significance of human nature through Kim jinsa & Teuk.
Firstly, I looked over the purpose of the study and stated the method and scope of the study at the 1st chapter.
At the 2nd Chapter, I abstracted meaning of modernity through a tragic love story under the suppressed social structure of Josun dynasty. It also dealt with realization of human nature that is a concomitant in the process of establishment of modernity, ambition of human being toward high ranked social status from the conflicts which was the result of feudal social system, and structure of right and wrong through isolated characters of the novel.
I considered the meaning of the death that two characters had chosen, which is the core of this study. I looked over their death that they had chosen to protect their willpower going up against contradictory feudal social system at the 3rd chapter.
At chapetr 4, I tried to meet with ideal of the author in enlarged world after death. The author lays bare the solutions to the questions that he raised in his works at the conclusion of novel. I view that the ideal of author toward modernity was come true by extricating their tragedy through death.
