한국 한문학은 해방 이후의 축적된 연구 성과를 바탕으로 국문학의 범주에 대한 수많은 논란을 거쳐서 지금은 국문학의 주요 영역으로서 큰 비중을 차지한 가운데, 국어, 문학, 한문 교과서의 주요 제재로 다루어지고 있다. 그렇지만 아직도 한국 한문학 작품에 대한 범주 설정이나 갈래 구분 등에 있어 국문 문학과 한문학에 공통으로 적용되는 통일된 기준이 마련되지 않음으로써, 교과서마다 각각 다른 양상을 보여주고 있는 실정이다. 이는 국문 문학과 한문 문학을 포괄하는 국문학에 대한 통합적 이해, 교육과정과 교과서에 대한 연구가 종합적으로 이루어지지 못한 데서 오는 필연적 결과라고 생각된다.
이에 따라 본 연구는 통시적으로 교육과정의 변천에 따라 고등학교 국어과와 한문과 교육과정에서 한국 한문학 관련 요소가 어떻게 바뀌어 왔는가를 고찰해보고, 공시적으로는 제6차 교육과정에 따라 편찬된 국어과와 한문과 교과서를 대상으로 거기에 수록된 한국 한문학을 분석해 봄으로써, 고등학교에서 지도해야 할 한국 한문학의 내용을 점검하고 앞으로의 지도 방향을 정립하는 기초 자료로 활용하고자 하는 데 목적을 두었다.
본 연구에서는 먼저 한문과 한문학, 그리고 한국 한문학의 개념을 정리하여 한국 한문학의 성격과 국문학과의 관계를 명확히 하였고, 한문학의 문체를 국문학, 나아가 문학 일반의 갈래와 통합하여 고찰하고 작품 분석에 적용하였다.
그렇지만 본 연구에서 가장 중시한 것은 국어·문학·한문 교과서 및 교과서 수록 한국 한문학 작품의 분석이다. 이 교과서 분석은 한국 한문학이 고등학교 교육에 어떻게 반영되고 있는지를 살피는 핵심적인 과제이다.
기본 자료로 사용한 교과서는 고등학교 국어(상·하) 교과서 2권, 고등학교 문학(상·하) 교과서 18종 36권, 고등학교 한문(상·하) 교과서 11종 22권 등 총 30종 60권이며, 그 주요 내용은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 국문학과 외국 문학, 고전 문학과 현대 문학, 국문 문학과 한문학 등 문학 작품의 영역별 비중을 작품의 수록 빈도와 지도 시간수에 따라 분석하여, 제재 선정의 일반적 경향을 살펴 본 후, 한국 한문학이 어떤 비중으로 취급되었는지를 고찰하였다.
둘째, 선정된 제재의 교과서 표기 방법, 수록 범위, 창작·번역·기록 등 작품의 성격을 고찰하였다.
셋째, 갈래별로 한국 한문학 작품 수록 상황을 분석하여, 갈래에 따라 교과서 편찬자나 한국인이 선호하는 작품과 그 경향을 파악하였다.
넷째, 작가별 또는 수록 문헌별로 작품 수록 상황을 조사 분석함으로써 주요 작가와 그들이 문학사에서 어떤 비중을 차지하는지를 살펴보았다.
다섯째, 시대별로 갈래를 나누어 작품 수록 빈도를 조사하고 그 경향을 분석하였다.
위에서 분석한 결과를 토대로 교과서 편찬 및 한국 한문학 제재 선정의 문제점을 제기하고, 교과서 편찬자들의 성향을 분석하여 그 원인의 일단을 살펴본 후 해결 방안을 모색하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The anciant Korean literature in Chinese character, which has been based on the accumulated results of its study since the Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, has undergone a lot of adverse criticism about a category of Korean literature, and now it has played an important role in a field of Korean literature and it has been adopted, used major materials for the textbooks of the Korean language, of Korean literature and of Chinese characters. But as the unified criteria, which are applied to both Korean literature and Chinese classics in categorizing Korean literature and Chinese one, have not been made yet, actually every textbook of its kind has different aspects. I think this essential result is derived from a lack of a comprehensive understanding of the Korean literature including Korean language literature and Chinese classics and a lack of studying of its curriculum and textbooks.
Thus, this thesis has its aim in checking up the content of the Chinese classics which we have to teach at high schools, and in utilizing this thesis as the basic materials for seting up the directions of its instruction by inquiring historically into how the elements related to Korean literature written in old Chinese characters on the curriculums of the Korean language and Chinese characters has changed according to the changes of the curriculum, and by analyzing synchronically Korean literature written in old Chinese letters which has been editted printed in the textbooks of the Korean language and the Chinese characters based on the sixth new curriculum.
In this thesis, to begin with, I have defined Chinese characters, Chinese literature and Korean literature written in old Chinese characters. I have also looked into the style of Chinese classics and Korean literature, and have united several fields of literature in general and have applied it to the analysis of its works. But in this thesis, what I have put emphasis on is to analyze the textbooks of the Korean language, literature, Chinese characters and the works of Chinese classics compiled in the Korean textbooks. The analyses of the textbooks have become the essential theme in judging how Korean literature written in old Chinese letters has been reflected in the high school education ,and for this thesis, I have used such basic materials as two kinds of Korean language textbooks (book1, book2), thirty-six literature textbooks (book 1, book 2) in their eighteen kinds, thirty-two Chinese character textbooks in their eleven kinds totaling sixty textbooks in thirty different kinds. Their main contents are as follows:
Firstly, I have looked into how importantly Korean literature written in old Chinese characters has been treated after I have analyzed the Korean literature and foreign literature, Korean classical literature and Korean modern literature, the Korean literature and Chinese literature according to the frequency of and the number of allotted periods of mentioning of works of each field of the literature and after I have also considered the general trend of selecting of themes of the literature.
Secondly, I have inquired into the characteristics of the works such as how to write, the selected themes of the textbooks, the scope, the creativity, the translation and the records.
Thirdly, I have looked into and analyzed the situations of writing down the sectional works in Korean literature written in old Chinese letters and I have found the works and the trends which the editors and the writers of the textbooks have preferred in each field.
Fourthly, I have looked into the importance of relationship between major writers and the history of literature by studying, and by analyzing the situations of editions of their works.
Fifthly, I have divided the works into several parts according to ages, studied and analyzed the frequency of compilation of the works.
On the basis of the above analyzed results, I have suggested how to compile the textbooks and how to choose themes of Korean literature written in old Chinese characters and I have sought how to solve the problem derived from the process after I have analyzed the intention of the textbook compilers and looked for the cause of the problem.
