고전문학이 지닌 교육적 성격을 보면, 고전소설은 상상력을 기를 수 있게 해주며, 언어 능력을 기를 수 있게 해 준다. 그리고 문학적 체험을 풍부하게 하고, 조화로운 삶의 태도와 방법을 익힐 수 있게 해 주며, 진한 감동을 주어 정서를 순화하고, 올바른 가치관을 기를 수 있게 해 준다. 또 전통문화를 계승 · 발전시켜 나갈 수 있게 해 주며, 비판 능력을 기를 수 있게 해 준다.
고전문학이 지닌 이러한 교육적 성격을 교육적 측면에서 활용한다면, 올바른 사고력과 상상력을 지닌 인간, 우리만의 특성과 아름다움을 알고 바르게 사용하는 능력을 지닌 인간, 한국적 정서와 가치관을 지닌 인간, 웃음과 재치를 지니면서도 비판적인 안목을 지닌 인간을 육성하고, 전통문화를 계승 · 발전시켜 나갈 수 있게 된다.
그러나 지금의 고전문학교육은 이런 성격은 무시된 체 교사의 중심에서 지식적인 요소의 주입으로 학습자에게 익숙하지 않은 언어의 해독, 장르적 특성, 작품의 구조 분석, 창작과 향유 당시의 상황 등을 암기만하는 방법으로 교육이 이루어지고 있다.
이에 본고에서는 현재 고전문학교육의 문제점에 대해 지적하고 그 대안으로 교육연극을 적용한 고전문학교육을 제시하였다.
교육연극은 연극이란 학습 방법을 통해 학생들이 배역을 맡아서 연극적 상황의 연출과 실행과정을 경험하고, 이 때 말과 몸짓으로 표현하는 문학 양식의 속성과 본질을 파악할 수 있으며, 궁극적으로는 문학 작품을 바르게 이해 · 감상할 수 있는 문학 능력도 함양할 수는 효과적인 수업방법이다.
이에 실제 중학교 국어교과서에 실린 고전문학작품 중 ＜홍길동전＞을 들어 그 수업방법에 교육연극을 적용해 보았다. 학습자는 연극을 통해 고전작품 속의 인물이 되어 봄으로써 고전작품을 친숙한 것으로 느끼고 흥미를 갖게 된다. 또한 조상들의 지혜와 가치관을 배우고, 민족적 정서와 사상을 이어받아 현 시대에 맞게 재창조 하는 활동이 될 수 있다. 이에 효과적인 고전문학교육 방법으로 교육연극을 제시하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Korean classics have a lot of educational effects. First, they can increase our imagination and linguistic ability. Second, they can make our literary experiences richer. Third, they can help us to learn the harmonious attitude in life. Fourth, they move and purify our hearts. Fifth, we can get a good sense of values from them. Sixth, we can succeed and develop our traditional culture by reading them. And finally they can help us to increase our critical ability.
If we utilize these qualities in education, we can foster people who have thinking faculty and imagination, people who know our own beauty and character and use them properly, people who have Korean feelings and values, people who have wit and critical eyes at the same time. And we can also succeed and develop our traditional culture.
However, today's Korean classics education ignores these character and it is being done as a cramming education. Teachers are in the center of education, not students. Teachers just make students memorize the interpretation of unaccustomed language, the character of the genre, the analysis of the structure of the work, the current situation of the times, etc.
So in this thesis, I indicate several problems of today's Korean classics education and recommend the method of Education Theatrical as an alternative.
Education Theatrical is a teaching method that students experience the direction and process of the theatrical situation by having a role in the play. At this moment they can grasp the essence and character of literary style which is expressed by language and gesture. After all students can cultivate abilities to understand and appreciate literary works correctly.
There upon in this thesis, I apply Education Theatrical to 'Honggildongjeon' which is in the middle school textbook. Learners get to feel familiar with the Korean classics and have interests in that by having a role in the play. And they also learn wisdom and values of our ancestors. In addition, they can succeed our national spirit and recreate it in line with the present time. So I suggest Education Theatrical as an effective method of the Korean classics education.
