이 글은 전통 민간신앙의 한 분야인 맹인 점복의 역사를 통시적으로 살펴보고 현대 사회에 있어 맹인 점복의 현황과 문제점을 진단한 것이다. 이를 통해 장애인의 직업재활이라는 측면에서뿐만 아니라 소멸되어 가는 문화전통을 보호한다는 측면에서 맹인 점복업에 대한 지원의 필요성을 제기하고 그 방향에 대해 제언하고자 하였다.
먼저 맹인 점술이 오랜 역사를 지닌 우리 문화 전통의 한 부분임을 논증하기 위해 맹인 점술의 유래에 대해 고찰하였다. 손진태 등에 의해 고려 중엽으로 추정되어 온 맹인 점복가 盲僧의 유래에 대해서는 이제까지 논의되지 않았던 일본 盲僧이 이미 8세기 이전 규슈 지방에서 讀經과 逐鬼, 점술의 역할을 수행해온 사실을 소개함으로써 한중일 맹인 점복의 전파 경로에 대해 되짚어보고 한반도 맹승의 기원이 고려 이전 고대시대까지 소급될 수 있는 가능성을 제시하였다.
다음 선행 연구를 바탕으로 조선시대 국가 차원의 보호 정책에 의해 맹인 점복가가 관상감 등의 관직에 등용되어 활약한 사실과, 조선조 맹인집회소인 明通寺, 盲廳을 중심으로 전개되어온 맹인 점복가들의 활동상을 재조명해 보았다. 또한, 개화기와 일제강점기로 대변되는 근대시기 맹인 점복이 사회적으로 어떻게 인식되고 또 어떻게 전개되었는지를 신문 일간지 등의 매체를 통해 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 현재 단절의 위기에 처해 있는 맹인 점복의 현황을 살펴보고 문화전통의 계승과 시각장애인 재활이라는 차원에서 맹인 점복을 지원할 필요성을 제기하였다. 이를 위해 현재 성북구 동선동에 밀집해 있는 시각장애인 점성촌의 사례와 맹인역리학회에서 주관하는 맹인 역학 양성 교육 현장을 탐문 조사한 사례를 제시하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article is to chronologically examine the history of the blind's fortunetelling which has functioned as a huge axis of folk religion in traditional societies and to diagnose the phenomena and matters of the blind's fortunetelling in contemporary society. This perceives the matter of the blind's fortunetelling which is decaying as the discontinuity of the cultural heritage which has the everlasting history. Furthermore, this is based on the conception that the matter of the blind's fortunetelling is needed to be more deeply discussed from the viewpoint of the self-support of the blind.
This article firstly examines the origination of the blind's fortunetelling in order to verify that the blind's fortunetelling is a part of our cultural heritage with a long history. Regarding the origination of 'maengseung', the blind fortuneteller, which is presumed up to the mid-Koryo dynasty period by Sohn JinTae and others, this article introduces the fact that Japanese blind fortuneteller had performed text-reading, exorcism, and fortunetelling as early as 8th century so that the spread route of the blind's fortunetelling throughout Korea, China, and japan is studied; thus this article suggests the possibility that the origination of maeseung can be traced back before Koryo dynasty period.
Nextly, based on the previous researches, this article clarifies the fact that the blind fortunetellers were hired to the positions in Gwansang-gam and became involved into the state affairs, and the activities and lives of the blind fortunetellers who were centered in 'myeongtongsa' and 'maengcheong' which were the blind's gathering posts during Choseon dynasty period. Also, how the blind's fortunetelling was socially perceived, during the modern period which is represented as gaehwagi and the Japanese colonial occupation era, in the process in which our folk religions were considered as superstition is discussed depending on the media such as daily newspapers.
Finally, the final chapter suggests that the support for the blind's fortunetelling is necessary for the succession of the cultural heritage of the blind's fortunetelling facing the threat of disappearance and additionally for the self-support of the blind people. For this, the case of Jeomseongchon in which the blind live together in Seongbuk-gu Dongseondong and the case that studies the blind's fortunetelling education hosted by the Blind's fortunetelling academy are provided.
