‘Archival Science(or Studies)’is not familiar with researches that much in Korea. ‘ECAI(Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative)’is not even more. However, Archival Studies are well developed in some countries and Korea had long tradition of archival management that was destroyed by Japanese invasion. In this study, I try to explain the main concepts and structure of two area and seek the possible way of collaboration.
ECAI is a kind of movement which pursues co-production and corporation of knowledge in web site. So DB/3D/Time-map are its organic components. Schematically, Archival Studies have a resourse- oriented character, while ECAI has a research-oriented one. I think that this is a key point of collaboration or supplement each other. And this is the reason why many archives around the world are participating in ECAI project as members. I’d like to suggest some examples. One of them is Charles Booth Online Archive.
The Charles Booth Online Archive is a searchable resource giving access to archive material from the Booth collections of the British Library of Political and Economic Science (the Library of the London School of Economics and Political Science) and the University of London Library.
The archives of the British Library of Political and Economic Science contain the original records from Booth’s survey into life and labour in London, dating from 1886-1903. The archives of the University of London Library contain Booth family papers from 1799 to 1967.
We may adopt this kind of display to. When, then we can In that so, we may find and use unlimited materials from archives, so to speak. Extensible-Resources.
First of all, archive provide ECAI basic research and DB with archives arranged and explained by archivists according to archival principles-provenance, original order and multi-level rule.
In reconstructing the administrative districts of Chosun Korea (1392- 1910), we may find its primary archives in Royal Archive. If Royal Archive arranged its materials properly, we can use these immediately by just linking in wed-site. By doing so, we may reduce the cost and the man power to waste. The same cases are any other DBs.
Secondly, ECAI may take advantages from archival experiences about the issues raised in digital environment. The Archival society also has studied the international standard for digitized records description-EAD DTD-, the issues of authenticity that seems one of the most important and serious problems in ERM(Electronic Records Management) and copy-right.
The most important thing I’d like to emphasize to achieve this collaboration between two area is the well developed archival management system by which each archive has to control their own holdings, the documentary heritage of society.
