이 글은 기생의 다양한 활동 중에 그들의 정체를 구성하는 핵심이 무엇이고, 그것이 그들의 활동과 어떤 관계가 있는지, 그리고 궁극적으로 그것이 당시 사회와 역사에 어떻게 기여했는지를 살펴본 것이다. 그 결과 기생의 가창 계보는 기생의 활동 방향과 정체를 형성하는 데 있어서 결정적이었고, 그것을 통해 기생들은 공적 사회에서 정당한 경쟁을 치를 수 있었음을 밝혔다. 기생 간의 경쟁의 궤적은 기생조직의 이합집산과 세력의 변화를 통해 살펴보았다. 그들이 치른 경쟁은 당대에의 생존 경쟁을 넘어서 역사에 대한 도전이라는 차원에 놓이기도 했다. 이 글에서는 특히 권력에 대한 기생의 도전을 정리해 보았다. 20세기 권력은 근대화와 무관하지 않기 때문에 기생들의 생존 경쟁은 근대에의 적응이 라는 역사적 과제를 수행하는 것이라고 이해된다. 근대 권력에의 대면에 있어서 기생들의 과제는 여러 차원의 도전을 시도하는 것이었다. 기생들이 일차로 대면한 권력은 일제의 권력, 즉 일방적이고 강제적인 권력이었다. 가창의 계보가 안정적이고 기예에의 무장이 충분했던 기생은 권력에 대해 유연하게 저항할 수 있었다. 기생 가운데 서울 우대의 노래, 서울 성 밖의 잡가(안진소리), 남도소리, 서도소리를 자기 정체의 핵심으로 삼고 전략적으로 이것들을 활용했던 경우는 근대에 살아남았다. 한편, 기생들은 일제의 권력에 대해 직접적으로 저항하기도 했지만, 자신들의 이익을 위해서 권력의 저변에 있는 근대적 명분을 적절하게 활용하기도 했다. 이러한 맥락 속에서 기생들은 전근대적 음악계의 권력과 관련된 일종의 문화 권력에도 저항할 수 있었다. 나아가 기생들은 조선 창작 음악의 한계속에서도 새로운 음악의 담당자로서의 역할도 충분히 해냈다. 기생들은 지역 잡가, 신제잡가, 가극의 창작, 신민요 등을 통해 근대 예술계의 과제였던 개성의 창출과 창조적 활동을 성공적으로 수행했다. 이 글을 통해 기생의 정체가 당시 사회의 일방적 권력과 다차원적 욕망이 교차하여 수동적으로 만들어진 것이 아니라 기생들의 근대에의 도전을 통해 만들어진 것이라는 점을 이해할 수 있게 될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

An objective of this article is to investigate what the core identities of Gisaeng were, how those identities were related to their activities, and how they contributed to the society. It has been found that vocal performing genealogy was crucial in forming the identity of Gisaeng (기생), providing the basis on which they could compete in the public society without discrimination. The repeated formations and separations of Gisaeng organizations and the frequent transfer of the initiatives among various groups show how seriously they competed. While there were always winners, they again struggled to prevail for a long time. In this article, the competitions of Gisaeng are described by investigating how they were adapted to the modern society. Gisaengs who formed their clear identify by concentrating on Songs of Seoul Udae (우대소리), Seoul Japga (서울잡가 : 안진소리), Namdosori (남도소리), and Seodosori (서도소리) generally survived. However, it has been revealed that the survivors not only played the successor roles of old songs, music drama and dances, but also actively dealt with the creation of modern works. In 1940s, the newly perceived creative activities included the emergence of local Japga (지방잡가), Shinje-japgagok (신제잡가), Gageuk (가극), and ShinMinyo (신민요). While their creative attempts occasionally accepted by the society, they also received severe critics. Another objective of this article is to examine how the vocal performance genealogy of Gisaeng affected their confrontation against the modern powers representing modernization. Gisaengs without excellent performance skills occasionally succumbed to the powers. Their primary opponent was Japanese power. While they collided directly with Japanese power many times, they often made use of the power under modernization. On the basis of The latter they could challenge some powers of pre-modern era, cultural hegemony by employing the modernization. This article elucidates the identities of Gisaeng were formed through their challenges in the modernization process, not by the coercive forces of the powers.
