오랜 시간 인류와 더불어 유지되어 온 부채는 단순히 더위를 쫓는 도구에서 민족의 멋과 기품이 담긴 예술로서의 의미를 내포 함으로서 더 이상 단순한 도구나 소품이 아니라 한국 춤에서 중요한 의의를 갖는다. 인간에게 친숙한 생활도구인 부채와 한국의 맨손 춤이 결합되면서 이는 대중성과 우리 민족 고유의 예술성이 조화를 이루게 된 것이다. 이처럼 부채가 한국 춤에서 갖는 의의는 쉽게 간과(看過) 할 수 없는 중요성을 지니고 있는 만큼, 본 연구자는 단순한 생활도구나 장식품, 소품 등으로써 부채가 가지고 있던 기존의 인식에서 벗어나 새로운 예술적인 관점에서의 인식전환이 필요하다고 판단하였다. 따라서 부채의 역사를 정립하고 부채를 활용한 한국 춤의 본질과 의미를 파악함과 동시에 무당 춤, 한량 무, 부채춤의 구조적 분석을 통한 기교와 상징적 의미를 도출하여 역사적, 예술적 가치를 통한 인식의 전환과 문화재적 가치를 연구하고자 하였다. 그리고 그 결과, 다음과 같은 결론을 도출할 수 있었다.
1. 한국 춤에서 활용되는 부채는 역사적 변천과정과 시대적 상황에 맞추어 안무 의도나 작품의 내용에 적합하게 점차 예술적으로 발전되었다. 오늘날 부채를 활용한 한국 춤으로 무당 춤, 한량 무, 부채춤을 대표적인 작품으로 손꼽을 수 있는데 이 세 가지의 작품 모두 부채의 기본적인 형태는 접선으로, 무당 춤에서 활용하는 부채는 부처나 신령, 승려, 나비와 꽃을 부채 선 면 전체에 원색으로 화려하게 그린 것이 특징이고 한량 무는 선비의 고고함과 순백이 느껴지는 백색의 부채, 선비를 상징하는 사군자를 주로 그렸음을 알 수 있다. 그리고 부채춤은 백색한지부채에 목단 꽃을 선 면에 그려 넣고, 때로는 깃털을 붙여 화려하게 장식하였다.
2. 부채를 활용하여 춤을 추는 것은 세계 여러 나라의 민속무용에서도 흔히 볼 수 있는 모습이지만 한국의 부채를 활용한 춤은 부채가 작품의 중요한 표현 체로써 춤을 이끌어가는 중심 역할을 하며, 다양한 부채기교에 우리민족정서에 적합한 각각의 상징적 의미를 내포하고 있다. 신과 인간을 연결하는 매개체로써의 역할, 한량의 풍류와 멋을 상징하며 부채춤의 화려하고 고귀한 아름다움 등이 모두 부채를 통해 세밀하게 표현되며 전달되고 있는 것이다.
3. 부채는 수천 년 동안 원래의 자연적인 기능을 발전시켜 다양한 분야로의 진화과정을 거치며 단순한 생활도구가 아닌, 한국 춤과의 결합을 통해 소중한 우리의 문화 예술적인 가치를 지니게 되었다. 이러한 부채를 활용한 한국 춤은 그 역사성과 전통성을 가지고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 이 춤들의 영향력과 예술적, 문화적 가치로 볼 때, 전승, 보존의 가치가 충분하며 이에 대한 연구와 노력이 지속적으로 이루어져야 할 것으로 사료된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A fan, which has long been used in human life throughout history, is not only a tool for driving the heat away but also an art bearing the beauty and elegance of a people. With the retained artistic connotations, it is not a mere instrument or prop but has a crucial meaning in Korean dances. As a fan, familiar tool in daily life, is combined with Korean dances with empty hands, popularity gets in harmony with artistry unique to Korean people. In this way, the significance of fans in Korean dances cannot be overlooked. Thus, the present researcher recognized the necessity for changing our perception of fan, casting off our existing idea of a fan as a simple daily tool, decoration or prop and viewing it from a new artistic viewpoint. Starting from this understanding, this study purposed to review the history of fans, to examine the essential nature and significance of Korean dances using fans, to analyze Korean dances such as shaman dance, Hallyangmu and fan dance through structural analysis and derive technical and symbolic meanings from them, and ultimately, to suggest the change of perception and the value of fans as cultural asset based on the historical and artistic value of fans. From the results were drawn conclusions as follows.
1. Fans used in Korean dances have been transformed artistically and fittingly for choreographic intention or the contents of dance according to historical development and situations. Representative Korean dances using fans are shaman dance, Hallyangmu (noblemen dance), and fan dance. In all of the three dances, the basic form of fan is a folding fan, but the fans used in shaman dance are decorated colorfully with the images of Buddha, deities, monks, butterflies and flowers covering the entire screen of the fans, while the fans in Hallyangmu are white and have the paintings of the four gracious plants (plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo) symbolizing the aloofness and purity of noblemen. In addition, fans used in fan dance are decorated gorgeously by drawing peony blossoms on the screen made of white Korean paper and, sometimes, attaching feathers.
2. The use of fans in dances is common in the folk dances of many countries throughout the world. In such dances, however, fans are just used but do not play any special role. In Korean dances using fans, on the contrary, the fans play a central role as an important expression medium that leads the dances, and fan techniques connote various symbolic meanings. They play the role of a medium between God and man, symbolize the taste and elegance of noblemen, and describe the gorgeous and lofty beauty of fan dance. All these are expressed and conveyed elaborately by the use of fans.
3. Through thousands of years’ evolution and differentiation from its original natural function to diverse areas, now a fan possesses cultural and artistic values in combination with Korean dances. Korean dances using such fans have historicity and traditionality. Considering the influence and artistic and cultural values of these dances, we need to continue research and efforts to preserve and transmit the dances.
