이 논문의 목적은 백석 시에 나타난 동양적 상상력을 분석함으로써 백석시의 유토피아 의식과 낭만성의 의미를 맞히는 데 있다. 이 논문에서는 한시의 영향을 받았거나 동양 고전을 직접 인용하거나 동양 고전을 읽은 흔적이 보이는 시들에 주로 주목하였다. 이 논문에서 백석 시의 동양적 상상력에 주목한다고 해서 백석 시의 근대성을 부정하는 것은 아니다. 오히려 동양적 상상력을 활용하는 방식에서 백석 시의 근대적 성격을 다시 한번 확인할 수 있다는 것이 이 논문의 독특한 시각이다.
논문의 2장에서는 백석의 시 「나와 나타샤와 흰 당나귀」를 통해 백석 시의 동양적 상상력이 창작의식과 어떤 관련을 지니는지 살펴보았다. 백석의시 「나와 나타샤와 힌당나귀」는 '기려행', 그 중에서도 눈이 흩날릴 때 당나귀를 타고 거니는 선비의 모습을 나타내는 이미지를 그 바탕에 깔고 있다. 이 시에서 느껴지는 낭만적 태도라든가 현실 도피적 태도는, '기려행'의 일반적인 이미지를 계승한 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 한시에서 주로 인용된 기려행이 선비의 유유자적하는 소요(逍遙)를 드러내는 것이었다면, 인용한 백석 시의 경우에는 기려행의 기본 정서에 이국적 여인과의 비현실적이고 낭만적인 사랑을 덧씌움으로써 연애시의 요소를 더해준다.
논문의 3장에서는 고전을 인용한 시에 나타난 은들의 상상력을 살펴보았다. 백석의 시에는 노자, 공자, 도연병, 이백, 두보 등의 동양 고전이 종종 인용되는데, 그것은 대개 은둔적이고 현실도피적인 삶의 태도를 드러낸다. 백석의 후기시에 나타나는 은둔의 상상력은 현실 도피적인 그의 성향을 드러내는 것이기는 하지만, 그 배면에는 세상과 화합하지 못하는 시인의 성향이 깔려 있다.
논문의 4장에서는 백석의 후기시에 자주 나타나는 '가난'의 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 백석의 시에서 가난은 단지 물질적 빈곤만을 의미하지 않는다. 시인이 현실에 대해 느끼는 결핍과 무소유의 문제를 포함하고 있는 하나의 태도이자 자의식적 공간을 의미하는 것으로 보아야 한다. 그의 가난에서 안빈낙도의 정신이 자주 연상되는 까닭도 여기에 있다. 백석 시인은 기꺼이 '가난'에 머무르지만, 훼손된 현실이 자아내는 쓸쓸함이 그로부터 묻어난다.
논문의 5장에서는 이상의 논의를 토대로 백석 시가 지향하는 유토피아의 모습을 구체적으로 그려 보았다. 그것은 모계적 공동체의 모습에 가까운 것으로, 이상향인 동시에 어디에도 없는 곳이었다. 백석 시의 동양적 상상력은 은둔적이고 도피 적이고 주변적인 태도와 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있는데, 이러한 분위기가 가부장적 지배 질서가 온존해 있는 공동체가 아니라 모계적 이고 원시적이고 이질적인 공동체를 지향하게 한 것으로 보인다.
이상에서 살펴본 바와 같이 백석의 시는 이질적인 것들이 각자의 개성을 잃지 않으면서 평화롭게 공존하는 모계적 공동체로서의 유토피아를 꿈꾸는데, 사실상 그 꿈에 도달하지는 못한다. 그의 낭만성이 감상주의에 빠지지 않고 현실과의 거리에서 쓸쓸함을 자아내게 하는 힘을 지닌다는 점에서 백석시에 근대적 의식이 작동하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그의 은둔적이고 도피적이며 주변적인 세계관은 궁극적으로 1930년대 후반기 시인으로서 백석이 자기자신에게 던진 '나는 누구인가?'라는 자의식적인 질문과 만남으로써, 시인이 처한 현실과의 괴리가 자아내는 쓸쓸함을 형상화하는 방향으로 나아가게 된다. 그것이 백석 시의 동양적 상상력이 근대적인 질문과 만나는 자리이며, 동시에 백석 시의 동양적 상상력이 근대적으로 작동하는 방식이었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim of this research is to identify the significance of utopianism and romanticism of Baek Seok's poetry by analyzing the Eastern imaginations portrayed in his poems. In this research, much attention has been given to the poems which seemed to have been influenced by Chinese poetry, directly quoted Eastern classics, or had signs of influence from Eastern classics. While this research focuses on the Eastern imaginations of Baek Seok's poetry, it is not meant to deny the modernity of Baek Seok’s poetry. On the contrary, this research is based on a unique foundation that modern characteristics of Baek Seok's poetry can be verified through the way he used Eastern imaginations in his work.
The second chapter of the thesis studies Baek's poem "The White Donkey, Natasha and Me" for the correlation between the Baek's Eastern imaginations and creativity. Baek's poem "The White Donkey, Natasha and Me" illustrates a scholar riding a donkey on a snowy day. The romantic and escapist attitudes of this poem resemble the general image of "Giryeohaeng (image of a scholar riding a donkey or a horse)." But looking close, while the Giryeohaeng quoted in Chinese poems usually displayed easygoing lifestyle of scholars, Baek's Giryeohaeng adds onto the basic sentiments of Giryeohaeng a romantic love with a foreign lady, enriching the poem more like a love poem.
The third chapter analyzes the secluded imaginations portrayed by the poems quoting classics. Baek often quoted Laotzu, Confucius, Lunwen, Dubo and other Eastern classics, and such quotations usually displayed seclusive and escapist lifestyle. The secluded imaginations found in Baek's later poems are evidence of his escapist attitude, but at the same time, it reflects the poet's inability to live in harmony with the world.
Chapter four discusses the meaning of "poverty" often illustrated in Baek's later poems. The poverty portrayed in Baek's poetry does not merely refer to material poverty. Rather, it has to be treated as the poet's attitude toward the questions of insufficiency and lack of possessions. This constitutes the main reason of his frequent description of being contented amid poverty. Baek willingly remains in "poverty", and yet he boldly expresses the pains of the distorted reality.
The fifth chapter of the thesis attempts to use the discussions above and compose a detailed picture of the utopia Baek's poetry pursued. It was more like a matricentric community, an idealistic society that exists nowhere. The Eastern imaginations of Baek's poetry closely relate to seclusive, escapist and environmental attitudes, and such attitudes apparently caused him to pursue a matricentric, primitive and heterogeneous community rather than a community based on patriarchal dominance and order.
As discussed above, Baek Seok's poetry preserves heterogeneity of things, and pursues a harmonious, coexisting and matricentric community as its utopia, but in real terms, such dream remains unachievable. The fact that Baek's romanticism does not indulge in sentimentalism and that he boldly describes the pain of reality, we can see that Back Seok's poetry has a substantial element of modernity in it.
