본 연구는 미국으로 유출된 전적 중 하버드대학 옌칭도서관에 소장된 한국본 전적을 분석해보았다. 분석결과 주제별 분석에서는 왕정정치에 필요했던 史部전적이 207종으로 가장 많았으며, 그중 族譜, 榜目, 戶籍臺帳, 實紀類가 많았다. 자부에는 불교전적이 집부에는 소설류, 개인문집이 많았으며, 소설류는 모두 근대에 간행된 딱지본 및 한글본이 많았다. 귀중서에 해당되는 임란이전에 간행된 전적은 13종이며, 전적의 대부분이 19세기에서 20세기에 이후에 간행된 전적들이었다. 간행지 및 간행처가 명확히 밝혀진 전적은 50여종 이었다. 開刊된 전적은 최초의 간행본이라는 점에서 의의가 매우 크다 하겠다. 개간된 전적은 8종이었다. 판본별 분석에서는 필사본이 406종으로 대부분을 차지하고 있다. 국내에서의 傳存여부를 파악해 본 결과 전존되지 않는 전적은 60종이었다. 그러나 필사본을 포한한다면 466종으로 94.9%를 차지하고 있다. 이제 해외에 산재되어 있는 우리의 전적을 제대로 발굴하고 세계화시키는데 가장 중요한 일은 반출된 한국 전적의 반환운동과 함께 전적의 수집은 보다 장기적인 계획을 수립하여 지속적으로 추진해야 할 과제이다. 그 첫 단계로 소장 국가의 우리 전적에 대해 심도 깊게 파악하고 양측이 모두 합리적인 방향으로 정보를 공유할 수 있는 협정을 맺는데 노력해야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study has analyzed old books printed in Korea but housed by the Harvard-Yenching Library in the USA. Referring to the analysis of the subjects of these books, history books account for the majority: there are 207 kinds of history books which record kings’ reign. They also include family genealogies, registers of those who passed the national exams, family registers, and practical writings. As for books about philosophies and religions, those on Buddhism take the largest portion. With regards to literary books, novels and individual anthologies occupy the majority. Many of the novels are found to be mostly movable print books and written in Korean. There are thirteen kinds of valuable books, which were published before the Imjin Waeran (the Japanese Invasion in 1492). Most of the books surveyed are found to have been published in the 19th and 20th century. There are about fifty kinds of journals and books whose publishers are clearly known. First issued journals are meaningful in that they were the first journals published. There are eight kinds of first issued journals. Referring to the analysis of printing types, there are forty six kinds of hand-written books, which account for the majority. A search of their existence in Korea indicates that sixty kinds of these books no longer exist in Korea. However, including hand-written books, the number of kinds of books that are no longer found in Korea has increased to 466. These kinds of books account for 94.9%. When finding books which originally belonged to Korea, and making them known to the world, it is necessary to make a long-tern plan and promote a lasting campaign to restore and recollect them. It is also important to understand the attitudes of countries toward the books which keep those books originally owned by Korea, and to make efforts to reach an agreement to share information about those books in a reasonable way.
