Trade formation in Northern and Southern State Period(南北國時代) is divided into official trade and private trade by the subject of trade. The subject of official trade is a royal household and privileged class. Private trade is divided into central, regional and maritime trade.
The network of Northern and Southern State Period is based on tributary system. It is divided into China centered vast market and regional market. The regional market in Northern and Southern State Period is three place. It is the Yellow Sea circle, East Sea circle and West Japan circle.
Trade goods of Silla(新羅) is mostly luxuries. Therefore priority in economy and growth of merchant in politics is limited. Balhae(渤海) import ceremonial goods from China and export handiworks & farm products to China. Balhae export special product to Japan and import raw material from Japan.
In view of 'MaeSillamoolhae(買新羅物解)', the settlement of Northern and Southern State Period is kind. For example, it is gold, silver and cotton.
The aspect of Northern and Southern State Period's trade is divided into four period. First period is from establishment of Balhae to before of 'rebellion of An-Sa(安史의 亂)'. The network of Northern and Southern State Period is formed by this period. Second period is from 'rebellion of An-Sa(安史의 亂) to before of Cheong Hae Gin(淸海鎭)'s establishment. This period is a higher position of Balhae's trade. Third period is from time of Jang Bo Go(張保皐)'s dead to establishment of Koryo(高麗). This period is a higher position of Silla's trade. Finally after Koryo established, hegemony of trade was turned to China traders.
