Porcelain patterns have different characteristics in different countries as well as in different regions and in different periods. In other words, porcelain patterns reveal regional characteristics and the differences of the times. The representative Korean historical porcelain, Corea celadon porcelain and Chosun porcelain (white porcelain and punchong ware), developed into different styles under social and religious influences. Especially, since Corea celadon porcelain and Chosun porcelain have all different characteristics, it is not difficult to identify cultural trends of Corea and Chosun times. From this point of view, this dissertation addresses the locus patterns reflecting the Corea times and the peony patterns reflecting Chosun times.
For this purpose, the dissertation first visits the concepts and characteristics of the patterns, identifies their backgrounds of the birth and symbolic meanings, and analyzes different types. Under the influence of Buddhism and Confucianism, which have been spread throughout Korea since the Three Kingdom Period, the lotus and peony patterns have been received as indigenous Korean patterns, based upon Korean traditional belie. In the Corea times, the Buddhist lotus patterns were popular, while the Confucian peony patterns in the Chosun times. The Corea Kingdom with the flourishing of the Corea celadon porcelain was a strict hierarchical society. Potters of the times, thus, had to hand down their accumulated skills to their children along with their professions, so pottery skills reached utmost sophistication with exquisite style and delicate patterns. When the 'Secret Color' of Corea celadon realized the perfect state, the intaglio patterns obtained reputation, while the pattern-engraving method of inlay, which was known to be developed first in the world, was widely admired when the secret color got out of fashion.
Therefore, most locus patterns on Corea celadon were engraved in intaglio or inlay method. However, during the chaotic period at the end of Corea with a series of civil wars and invasions of Japanese pilots, the exquisite methods of intaglio and inlay got lost and become rough and crude, losing its aristocratic tastes and delicacies. Instead, iron processing method (Cheol-Hwa) emerged and replaced them.
In Chosun times, the pattern-engraving method become rough but led to the engraving method of punchong ware, producing a variety of engraving methods (Jo-Hwa, Sang-Gam(inlay), Bak-Ji, Cheol-Hwa and Pun-Jang). Hoever, punchong ware became extinct during the upheaval of Korea-Japan War, white porcelain newly appeared with the unique pictorial pattern called Chong-Hwa (patterns engraved with cobalt), which was in line with punchong ware's patterns and became dominant. Thus, most peony patterns in Chosun times were engraved in punchong or chong-hwa. At the same time, the locus patterns from Corea were still present in the Chosun times, which means that Buddhism lied at the bottom of Korean sentiment despite the dominancy of Confucianism. Likewise, the reading of the porcelain patterns reveal not only the religious and social aspects of the times but also human characteristics of a people.
