조선후기에, 여성이 영웅적 활약을 벌이는 이야기가 중심이 되는 소설이 창작되어 여성독자를 비롯한 많은 사람들의 인기를 끌었는데, 그것은 바로 여성영웅소설이다. 여성영웅소설이 창작되기 시작했던 조선사회는 남성중심적인 유교적 가부장제하에서, 남존여비를 내세우며 철저하게 여성을 억압하고 가정에만 가두어 두었던 폐쇄적인 사회였다. 그러던 것이 임병양란을 겪고 지배층에 대한 불신과 신분제에 의한 회의로 인해 유교적 사회질서에 동요가 오기 시작한다. 또한 실학사상이 일어나 현실에 대한 개혁의지를 드러냈으며 천주교가 몰고 온 평등사상은 많은 민중들 특히 여성들에게 커다란 공감을 불러일으켰다.
여성영웅소설 중에서 가장 후대의 작품으로 보아지는 <정수정전>, <이학사전>, <홍계월전>의 세 작품이 서사단락을 분석하고 <출생>→<남복착용>→<시련>→<수학>→<응과와 급제>→<출정과 입공>→<여복착용>→<결혼>→<남녀대립>→<갈등해소>의 공통 구조를 추출하였다. 그리하여 여성우위형 작품의 여주인공은 자아실현의 의지를 가지고 그것의 실현을 위해 스스로 남복을 착용하였으며 결혼을 거부하고, 결혼 후에도 남편과 대립을 일으켜 우위를 확인하는 특성을 가지고 있는 것을 알 수 있다.
이러한 여성우위형 여성영웅소설에서 드러난 여성의식과 여주인공의 자아실현 의지를 통해 여성우위형 여성영웅소설이 근대적 성향을 띠고 있음을 알 수 있다. 여성영웅소설은 여성이 남성과 동등하거나 그것을 능가할 정도의 의식과 능력을 보여줌으로써 여성의 각성된 면모를 보여준다.
여성영웅소설은 여성독자의 기대와 관심에 부응하고 욕구를 충족시켰으며, 여성독자에게 신분상승에의 의지를 심어주었을 것이다. 또한 여성영웅소설은 영웅소설의 변모된 과정으로, 유교적 이념이 동요되고 있는 사대적인 현상을 표출한 작품이며, 여성의 문제를 다룸으로써 변화되어 가는 조선조 여성들의 의식에 초점이 맞추어진 작품이라는 문학사적 의의를 가진다. 이러한 여성영웅소설은 많은 근대적 요소를 보이고 있는데, 신소설<추월색>과 비교해서 검토해보면, 여성영웅소설은 영웅소설의 후대형으로서 고소설의 말기에 위치하면서 근대소설로 지향하는 과도기적인 신소설에 많은 영향을 끼쳤다고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the late period of Cho-seon Dynasty, the stories in which women played an active part in a society like male heroes were very popular with female readers. That's the novel of female hero which will be studied in this paper.
In the Cho-seon society where was kept in men-centered and patriarchal system based on confucian ideas, women's right was entirely suppressed and exclusively detained in the house. Throughout the both of wars - Imjin and Byungja, there was change of consciousness - distrust as to ruling classes and social class system itself and it was led to total confusion of society based on confucianism. Realistic idea including social reformation tendency and Catholicism with equality were also appealed to public.
In this paper, I analyzed narrative paragraphs of the three novels regarded as the latest ones among many novels of female hero - "Jeongsujeongjeon", "Ihaksajeon" and "Honggyeweoljeon“. And I found out common sequent plot of <birth>→<wearing the man's costume>→<troubles>→<studying>→<success in an examination>→<rising and achievement>→<wearing the woman's costume>→<marriage>→<confrontation between man and woman>→<dissolution of conflict>. The female protagonists of the novel of female hero try to realize self-esteem, wear the man's costume and refuse to marry. Even if they are married, they try to be in a superior position to their husbands in conflict. Considering this kind of feministic tendency and the struggle for identity of female protagonists in the novels of female hero, we can see that the novel of female hero has a tendency to be modernized. The novel of female hero presents the modernized female feature by reflecting that women have abilities equal or superior to men.
The novel of female hero is a kind of transformation from the heroic novel and reflects the confusion in the society ruled by confucian idea. In addition, it could satisfy female readers at that time and also made them have concerns and hope for raising their social status. This modernized tendency in the novel of female hero had many influences on the new-style novel which arose since the period of Korean enlightenment and played an important role of stepping stone to modern novel as we know when comparing the novel of female hero with new novel <Chuweolsaek>. In this point of view, the novel of female hero can be significant in the history of Korean traditional literature.
