Abstract
In this study, I tried to study the 「Sohak(小學)」, which was widely studied in choseon period in the perspective of the study of Confucian classics. Through this study, I examined the trend of studying Sohak in late Choseon period and determined the academic trend and performance of 'Sohakhak(小學學)‘ and its goals. I listed all performances of study of Sohak in late Choseon period as 'Sohakhak' and attempted to find out how it was studied then. From this perspective, I analyzed many literature and documents on 'Sohakhak', such as questions and answers book, lecture notes, reviews, leading articles and interpretation books where the academic discussions on Sohak were written. The followings are the performance of study.
I defined all kinds of discussions on the Sohak including books describing the goal of study, contents system, fragmentation system, how to interpret the book, interpretation of each sentence and words, and lecture on faithfulness and loyalty as 'Sohakhak'. Based on that, I tried to find how 'Sohakhak' was formed and developed before and after Lee Hwang's The ten Diagrams of sage learning(聖學十圖) and Yi I's Sohakchipju(小學集註). 「Sohakdo」 focuses on the structure of the Sohak while Sohakchipju concentrated on the review of the interpretation of Sohak and new discussions.
Next, I applied Zhuxi's(朱熹) segment interpretation method for understanding a Confucian classic to the study of Sohak and tried to understand Sohak in the segment method. Though there was a method used by Lee Sung, a Chinese scholar, in late Choseon period, scholars such as Ryuwimon and Ryuchunggyo established their distinguished segment interpretation systems. I grouped the interpretation of the interpretation of Sohak into 'interpretation of each sentence ande words' and 'lecture on faithfulness and loyalty'.
The lecture on faithfulness and loyalty is the independent opinion on the interpretation of Sohak that it cannot be found in China and Japan. "Kiho School(기호학파)" and "Sungho School(성호학파)" have their own distinguished interpretation systems.
The sincere study by them produced many high quality books, such as Yi Ik's Sohakjilseo, Lee Su Ho's Sohakchipjujeonghae(小學集註增解) and Ryuhwimon's Sohakjanggu(小學章句). The study on Sohak had been deepened and produced its distinguished academic results during 2 or 3 hundred years in late Choseon period. It is very meaningful that Sohak had been defined as a field of study in the perspective of interpretation and had its own position in the history of ideology study.
