'國際化(국제화)'로 대변되는 현대의 문화상황에서 한국 정신문화의 傳統(전통)과 現代化要求(현대화 요구)의 상호충돌은 피할 수 없는 시대적 추세이다. 한국의 현대미술은 열려진 국제감각에 의해 서구미술의 도입 속에서 내용뿐만이 아니라 표현방식 면에서도 多樣性(다양성)과 個別性(개별성)을 보여 이른바 탈 장르, 장르의 혼합현상, 재료사용의 개방성, 이를 통한 표현의 극대화현상이 분출되고 있다. 또, 90년대에 들어와서 80년대의 水墨(수묵)과 彩色(채색)의 작업 형태를 벗어나서 서구의 構造性(구조성)을 받아들이는 경향 - 사진 · 입체작업 · 설치 · 테크놀로지 등 재료와 소재에 구애를 받지 않는 자유분방한 실험의 다양한 현상들이 나타나고 있다.
이렇듯 다양한 현상의 중심 축에는 언제나 전통의 계승과 연관되어 거론된다. 전통이란 공통집단의 체험과 지식의 산물로써 역사를 통해 나타나는 고유한 형식으로 새로운 풍조에 의해 쉽게 말살될 수 없는 특수성을 갖고 있는 民族的有産(민족적 유산)이기 때문이다.
예술은 그 시대의 사회적 · 문화적 상황을 가늠하게 하는 역할을 하고 있음을 생각할 때, 현대미술의 상황 속에서 우리의 예술의지와 세계관이 담긴 전통미술양식을 찾고 이를 현대화의 요구에 새롭게 계승시키고 발전시키는 일은 매우 바람직한 일이다.
그러므로 본 고에서는 우리 고유의 조형미의 원형을 찾으려는 것에 초점을 맞추어, 전통의 현대적 수용을 위한 방향으로 민족적 정서가 담긴 民畵(민화)를 살펴봄으로써 그 시대의 사회적 여건 속에서 추출되는 민중의 美意識(미의식)을 파악하며, 민화의 미적, 전통적 가치의 설정과 함께 조형적 특성을 분석하여 민화의 올바른 미술사적 이해를 도우려 한다. 또한 민화와 한국 현대회화와의 비교 분석을 통하여 민화가 현대회화에 어떻게 수용되고 발전되었는지 알아보고, 이것을 기초로 하여 한국 현대회화의 발전가능성의 방향을 제시해 보고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The so-called globalization in modern culture situation, the tradition of Korea's mental culture and modernization demand is yet to collide. Korea's modern art is an introduction of the occident art as an opened international sense, not only in the content but also in the way of expressing shows variety and individuality like those of category, the mixture phenomenon of category, the greatest phenomenon of expressing is gushing out due to this. Moreover in the coming of the nineties, out of the chinese talk and painting form in the eighties and aptitude of accepting the occidental structuralism. Photographs, three dimensional work, installation technology etc. It does not stick to the material or the subject and variety of state in an unrestrained experiment.
Thus, in the center of a various phenomeon, inheritance of a tradition is always connected. A tradition is the experience of a community group and the result of a knowledge. It is a national heritage unique, unerasable by the new trend that comes out of the history in a peculiar form.
When Art is thought about the situation of a society and culture in a certain period estimating its job. It is desirable taking over today's demand developing, finding a tradition art style filled with our artistic reliance and the worldview in a modern art situation
Therefore in this writing we focus on getting back our native, original form of the formative art. Look at a folk painting filled with national mood for a traditional modernized acception, understanding the extract of people's thoughts on beauty in a society circumstances, the beauty of a folk painting, choosing a traditional value the unique shape help understanding the right artistic thoughts. Moreover from a comparison analysis between a folk painting and korean modern art painting find out how folk paintings were accepted and developed in modern paintings and this as a base present the development possibility of korean modern art.
