This paper at tempts to evaluate the value of Korean paintings in the light of Korean painting history through some painters and folk paintings. The Korean paintings took roots in the later of Chosun Dynasty, undergoing a lot of changes of the period.
As for. the period background, the disturbed society before the 1592 Japanese invasion into Korea and the economic difficulties resulted from the hard times were described in this paper. Yong-jo, and Jong-jo paved the way for considering the contemporary paintings as true Korean paintings through their cultural renovation efforts. The Shilhak thoughts (practical learning) resulted from the renovation will of the people were settled down and Taoism shamanism, prevailing Chinese cultrue contributed to the changing of the minds of the people, thus enhanced the Korean fine arts to a new level.
Concerning the interpretation of painters and their works, creativity and characteristics of the painters were about to burgeon forth from the middle period of the Chosun Dynasty on This fact can explain the realization of new thoughts and social backgrounds. Thus, Chinese thoughts that prevailed in the every corner of the Chosun Dynasty culture came to be discarded and revolutional creations were desired. In view of these situations, the feat of avantgardes of Korean fine arts was evaluated in an objective way.
With the rising consciousness of nationalism, folk paintings by common people indicate the purity and creativity of Korean fine arts. The folk paintings are the epochmaking results of our fine arts and their meaning and value were focused along with actual landscapes, and genre paintings which were descended from the later of the Chosun Dynasty.
In conclusion, the above trends were doomed to disappear becasue of social disturbances, introduction and effects of western things after the 18th century. In this connection, the meaning of Korean painting through the viewpoints of fine arts and paintings was evaluated and the national need of righteousness and preserving and developing of the Korean paintings as the people paintings were discussed in this paper.
