      The thought of Loyalty and Filial piety has dominated the national spirit as a living philosophy and practical ethics, harmonized with the worship of Heaven and ancestors and the humanitarianism, a traditional thought of loving human beings.
      Loyalty represents subjecthood and faithfulness devoting oneself to. It also means a trust in relation with other people and services for a sovereign, nation, and people as a spirit of supreme fairness and impartiality. Filial piety implies respect for parents on the basis of love. It also shows characteristics of religious reverence and super-ethics emphasizing on dignity of life. The essence of Loyalty and Filial Piety should be found in love and altruism.
      The thought of Loyalty and Filial piety has morally sublimated the desires originated from the most instinctive impulses of human beings living in the world. Loyalty indicates the desire of breeding which represents space expansion, while Filial piety implies the reproductive urge which clovers time continuation from generation to generation.
      This idea, Loyalty and Filial piety, is based on the free will of human nature. The act of Loyalty and Filial piety, thus, should be voluntary and autonomous. And it can be realized when this thought has a power for self-determination and resolution harmonized with immutable humanity and circumstantial rationality.
      So far, the ethics of Loyalty and Filial piety has shown the conservative, upward, vertical, mysterious, irrational, and conventional aspects. In this respect, it has been blamed as premodern and antidemocratic one. However, Loyalty can be understood as an idea which brings whole harmony from a very individual. On the other hand, Filial piety has an essential meaning which makes it possible to overcome the limitedness of individuality and can be recognized as a basic ethics for keeping society sound. Every human being is not only limited in time but also isolated in space. But the reason why people can organize a group is because every life doesn't disappear at the same time, though an individual has such limitation. Loyalty is served in guaranteeing how human beings can continue to exist in harmony and good order. While Filial piety makes life continue vertically with high quality of life, Loyalty horizontally promotes harmonious life in society.
      The ethics of Loyalty and Filial piety was established with an intention to lead human life to the right direction for a family, kindred, and people in society or nation. Therefore the basic spirit of Loyalty and Filial piety is not a virtue limited to a specific social or ruling structure but a permanent ethics. A problem is how to embody the spirit according to the times.
      Since the ethics of Loyalty and Filial piety is based on human nature and tradition, it can be settled easily in present society when applied in good ways balanced with our cultural life, though other cultures driven from different countries might cause conflicts with our own values.
      In this context, the subject of Loyalty in the current meaning should be changed from a ruler to a nation, without infringing the democratic ideal and patriotism and cooperative spirits should developed by popularizing loyalty. Filial piety is an expression of human dignity for love of human beings, conforming the democratic ideology. So Filial piety is required to be reasonable and realistic for restoring and maintaining intimate families.
      As the education of Loyalty and Filial piety aims at teaching values, it should be implemented not for particular people or groups but for general people with social values. And it also must not be influenced by limitation of time and space or specific methods as well. Not only it has to be done in every field of life, such as home, school, and society, but also it should be carried out in theory and practice.
      Consequently, education of Loyalty and Filial piety should be accomplished with the cooperative spirit and patriotism based on human dignity, harmonious family, cooperation, and services in an atmosphere for promoting individual spontaneity and horizontal relationship.
