본고는 삼국시대 유리기의 기원과 유입경로를 밝히기 위해 고고학적 방법을 차용하여 세밀한 분석을 하였다. 삼국시대 유리기는 한반도 동남부의 신라와 가야지역에서 집중적으로 출토되었다. 서양의 일상적인 생활용품이 한반도로 유입되어 사회신분이 높은 왕족의 무덤에 위세품으로 부장되었다는 것은 당시 유리기는 귀중품이었음을 알 수 있다. 유리기는 비단, 도자기 등의 유물과 함께 실크로드를 통해 전세계적으로 분포한다. 유리기는 제작지와 유입시기, 그리고 유입경로에 대한 연구를 통해 고대 동서양의 교류양상을 고찰할 수 있는 중요한 유물이다.
삼국시대 유리기의 기원과 유입경로에 대해서는 다양한 견해들이 존재한다. 그러나 일반적으로 삼국시대 유리기의 제작시기와 제작지에 대해서는 4세기 동지중해지역으로 간주되고 있으며, 신라에서 직접 제작된 사례도 있는 것으로 여겨지고 있다. 본고는 속성분류, 제작기법 그리고 비교분석을 통해, 삼국시대 유리기는 서방에서 제작되었으며, 신라제 유리기는 존재하지 않는 것으로 추정하였다.
지금까지 유리기의 유입경로에 대해서는 초원루트, 사막루트 그리고 해상루트의 3가지 見解가 있다. 대다수의 학자들은 초원루트를 주장하고 있지만, 필자는 신라, 가야에서 출토된 기타 외래계 유물과 역사기록 및 배경을 통해 해상루트를 통해서 유입된 것으로 추정하였다.
유리기에 대한 연구는 여러 연구자에 의해 진행되고 있지만 대부분이 미술사적 논증과 과학적인 분석을 통해 진행되고 있다. 고고학적인 분석은 부족한 상태이며 고고학적인 시각으로 연구할 필요성이 제기된다. 그리고 최근 한국을 포함한 동아시아 각지에서 새로운 자료가 출토되었다. 그러므로 본고에서는 최신 자료를 추가하여 한반도 유리기의 기원과 유입경로를 고고학적 방법으로 살펴보았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This Paper explained about the origin and inflow route of the Three Kingdoms Period glasses found in Korea with a detailed analysis using an archaeological method. The Three Kingdoms Period glasses were concentrated found in Silla and Gaya located in the southwestern part of the Korean Peninsula. Although glasses are used as the daily necessities such as dishes, plates in west, but after the introduce to the Korean Peninsula, glasses became rare and valuable buried in the tomb of the elevated royal family as treasures. Glasses as well as silk and porcelains are popular in not only east but also west and distributed worldwide through the Silk Road. So glasses are important artifact to know the ancient trade and communication between east and west by studying of where they came from, when they made and how they spreaded.
There are several hypotheses for the origin and inflow of Glasses in the Three Kingdoms Period. Most of the scholars believed that glasses found in silla are produced in the East Mediterranean area in the fourth century. But some of the scholars think that several glasses were made in silla or China. However through the archaeological analysis and compare of glasses both in east and west, it is estimated that glasses found in korea are all made in the western and there is no glasses made in the East. There are also three hypotheses for the inflow of glasses in Korea. Step-route, Desert-route and maritime route. Among them, the majority of scholars admitted to the step-route. But according to the history background and archaeological analysis glasses were most likely to have been introduced to Korea by the maritime route.
The study of glasses is ongoing by a lot of scholars. But most of them were researching by fine arts study and scientific analysis. An archaeological analysis of glasses is inadequate and there are still plenty of questions to research. In addition there are some new archaeological discovery of glasses in East Asia including Korea recently which haven’t been on a academic discussion yet. So it’s necessary to add up-to-date archaeological discovery to research the origin and inflow of the glasses found in the Korean Peninsula.
