본 논문은 조선후기 北學派의 한 사람인 朴齋家(1754-1805)의 北學思想에 관한 연구이다. 이 글은 그의 저서 《北學議》와 북학파 주요 구성원들의 글 가운데 관련있는 부분을 통해서 박제가의 사상에서 북학적 요소를 밝히기 위한 것이다. 《北學議》는 흔히 북학파들의 실학적인 특성을 언급 할 때마다 자주 이용되곤 했는데 본고는 이 《北學議》를 전면적으로 분석하고 정리함으로써 박제가의 북학사상의 실체를 더 구체적으로 알아 보고자 했다.
우선 박제가의 《北學議》 내용을 크게 4개의 범주에 따라 분류·정리하여 보았는데 살펴본 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 《北學議》에 나타난 경세관과 경제관에서는 백성들의 생활을 낱낱이 드러내면서 위정자의 각성을 촉구하였고, 士·農·工·商四民들의 일에 대해 구체적인 利用厚生 방안들을 제시하므로써 진정한 선비의 책임이 무엇이었던가를 다시 생각하게 해주었다.
둘째, <北學辨>과 <尊周論>을 통해 보여 주는 華夷論의 수정 과정과 兆學의 論理는 전대·당대의 그것을 뛰어 넘는 것이었고, 변하고 있는 시대 분위기를 간파하고 제시한 적극적인 대응방안이었다.
셋째, 그의 學問과 藝術觀에서는 서얼이라는 신분적 제약에서 오는 갈등을 經學의 깊은 연구와 美意識으로 승화하고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
박제가의 《北學議》는 당시 일련의 연행록의 하나로 여겨지나 기행문의 성격보다는 각 항의 글들이 論說의 성격을 띄는 것이 특징이다. 국정전반에 관한 것에서 심지이 메주로 장 만드는 제조 과정까지 불합리한 것들을 샅샅이 기록한 것이 그의 글이다. 아울러 우리와 중국-淸-의 실정을 비교해 놓고서 '學中國'만이 진정한 尊周요, 살 길임을 역설하고 있는 것이다. 그가 최대의 관심을 나라의 救貧에 둔 것은 선비의 도리인 '그 시대의 인식'에 게으르지 않았다는 증거가 되며, 그 대안으로는 '北學'을 주장하
였던 것이다. 燕巖은 박제가의 이러한 학문적 성향을 우려한 나머지 '法古創新'의 대목을 일러 주는데, 이것은 貞유에게 '創新'의 남다른 기질과 재주가 있었음을 반증하는 예가 되기도 한다. 또한 이러한 그의 학문적 특성은 구체적인 富國强兵의 실천 방안을 창출할 수 있게 했으며, 또한 후대의 開化派들에게 그 특성이 연계되어 감을 볼 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This dissertation is a study on the thought of bukhak(北學議) of Park. Jae-Gah(朴齋家) one of the major scholar of the late Chosun(朝鮮) dynasty. Through inquiry into 'Bukhakui'(北學議) I have sought to clarify the intrinsic qualities of his poetry and make clear his significance and position in our Korean history.
Park. Jae-Gah worked hard to subliminate the hardships brought about by his social position as the son of a concubine through the an forms of poetry, calligraphy and painting. A progressive debater and logical poetry critic, he was also thoroughly conscious of his role as an author as well, producing distinguished literary works.
Believing that the written word must conform to colloquial speech he considered important the relationship between character, sound, meaning and reacted sensitively to changes in social customs regarding writing. Stressing that one must preserve ege's innate characteristics given by heaven while preperly.
'Bukhakui'(北學議) of reflection and subjugation, through taking a series look at himself he shows his resolve to overcome the hardships and conditions of his environment. His later poems, however, shows that his reflective attitude became more relaxed.
'Bukhakui'(北學議) in search of an unworldly world, he pursues mental satisfaction or partial reconciliation with reality. Here we can see his will to live free from the restrictions and customs of the age by maintaining harmony with friends and returning to nature.
What is most notable about Park, Jae-Gah's style of expression is the pictorial character of his poetry. He was also a painter, developing a discerning eye through associating with painters of men of letters. Painting theory frequently appears in his prose and verse, his paintings and poetry are in very closely related, I have understood this to be an intellectual effort to control ones emotions through objectification of the subject, and have judged this to be the result of his adherence to an attitude of endless pursuit of art in several.
I have understood the modem character of his poetry to be existential consciousness and endless endevours as a scholar, his sense of duty as an intellectual with a critical point of view, and his use of materials from life in our country, as opposed to other poets of the day who tried to immitate things Chinese.
