The purpose of this thesis is to study the satirical aspect which we know is the representative characteristics of Yeon Am's novols.
So, shedding light on the characteristics of satire literature, I began to study the motive of his writing satire novels, the objects of his satires, and the methods of describing them.
This can be summarized as follows :
(1) The satire literature as the mode of social literature is founded with a critical spirit, and aims at amendment of follies and vices in men and societies. Under top of it, it is useful to human life for giving a certain of instruction and delight both.
(2) The satire found in Yeon Am's novels can be divided in terms of times background, his individual and family background.
Regarding to the former category, satire literature came into being when the structural conflict of the society of the Yi-dynasty was sharply attacked to be rectified by such new learnings as 'Si1-hak' (實學) or so-called western science. as regards the latter, he had a character with broad-mindedness, heretical inclination, wide experences and profound knowlege on various subjects besides being a actual stand-bearer of Sil-hak. and despite a good family environment, He was always pursued by the Consciousness of non-factioner estranged from the rut ins class.
So, he established the condition upon which the structural conflict of his contemporary society was to be satirzed and criticized.
(3) The objects of satire found in Yeon Am's novels can be classified into four categories.
first, 'Buk-bel' (北伐), economic, social and personnel policies of the ruling class.
Second, such value trends at that time, as escapism of the learned class, pseudo-science, the despising for agriculture, depraved friendship and obscenity.
third, demolition of class consciousness and remarriage permission of women.
fourth, innate defects of human-be ing.
(4) The methods and means of satire in Yeon Am's novels are divided into three categories : satire allegory, vebal satire and tone.
first. satire allegory is clearly represented in the novel 'Ho-jil' (虎叱) in which a superior tiger and a base human-being are markedly contrasted.
In 'Heo-sang goon' (□生傳), this is materialized in the form of an ideal nation.
Second, verbal satire is represented by verbal expression or rhetorical form whose concret kinds are pun, metaphor, pardox or wit .'Ho-jil' 'Min-ong jeon'(閔□傳), 'Yang-ban jeon' (兩班傳) are the works in which this forms are used.
Third, tone is determinant of the strength of satire shown in the work.
Direct invective as strong tone is largely used in Yeon Am's novels.
That is, the corrupt ion of 'Yang-ban jeon' and the cruelty of human nature are poignantly castigated, and wife inveighs her husband in severe manner.
