This thesis is about the genres on the subject of common people, which is focused on the researches on the genres done by two noblemen in the late of 18th century, Kong-gae Yoon Du Seo and Kwanajae Cho Young Suk.
To begin, chapter 1 introduces the relative importance the genres of a nobleman holds in the history of paintings, the summary of the research history which has already been completed, and the purpose of my thesis.
Chapter 2 and 3 deal with the personal aspects of Yoon Du Seo and Cho Young Suk: their families and lives, their associations, social relationships, their academic tendencies, their view of paintings, and the comparision and analysis of their genres on the subject common people.
Yoon Du Seo came from a family that followed the Namin department. He had the academic propensity for practical science rooted in the Sunglihak which was a dominant science in 18th century. In his paintings, he had a compound tendency. In other words, he pursued not only a traditional style but also chinese style of painting, carefully trying a genre that would relate to common people.
Cho Young Suk was born in the family of Noron and had the chinese-oriented ideology of the privileged Noron classes in power at that time. Also he emphasized the idea of realistic views of paintings in which an artist must observe an object himself or herself and draw it. And his genres are much more realistic and lively than Yoon Du Seos paintings. In addition, his genres give people the feeling as if people stay in the spot of his drawings.
Chapter 4 deals with the two artists characteristics of their paintings as well as their roles and importance that they occupy in the history of painting, based on the analysis in the chapters 2 and 3.
The noblemen of that time generally had a negative attitude toward painting. In this situation, the trial of the genres on the subject of common people by these two noblemen was personally a frontier tendency and agead of their time. However, there were many different changes in social, economic, and cultural background that didnt exist in previous days.
The distinctive atmosphere which was conducted Cho-sun dynasty was organized in the fields of culture and art. This atmosphere was also appiled to painting. These two noblemen practiced social, economical, and cultural changes in their drawings. In addition, the move toward the genre of common people made the great foundation which enabled the painters of the following period to draw a genre with mind at ease.
