카롤루스 가문은 불안정한 이베리아 반도 북동부의 정세를 활용하여 730년대부터 셉티마니아 정복에 나섰다. 카롤루스 마르텔루스는 셉티마니아 최북단의 주요 도시들을 공격했으며 피피누스 3세는 고트 귀족들과 개인적 유대 관계를 구축하는 동시에 고트 주민들에게 서고트 법 준수를 허용하는 유화정책을 통해 피레네 산맥 이북의 셉티마니아를 병합하는데 성공했지만 778년 카롤루스 마그누스의 이베리아 반도 원정은 성과를 거두지 못했다. 이후 아버지로부터 해당 지역의 정복사업을 위임받은 루도비쿠스 1세는 군사 작전과 외교술을 통해 프랑크 왕국의 영토를 지속적으로 늘려나갔으며 그 결과 801년에 바르셀로나를 획득하고 820년경에는 에스파냐 변경백령의 경계선이 완성되었다.
그러나 제국의 중심부에서 멀리 떨어진 변경이었기에 이 지역의 정세는 늘 유동적이었고 치안 및 행정 책임자인 백들이 독자적인 행동을 펼칠 가능성 또한 존재했다. 이 같은 상황에서 카롤루스 왕조는 ‘아프리시오’를 통해 잦은 전쟁과 이교도의 억압으로 인해 늘어난 유랑민들을 정착시켜 평시에는 농업 노동력으로, 유사시에는 군사력으로 활용하는 한편, 지역 주민과 직접적인 관계를 맺음으로써 해당 사회에 왕권을 인지시켰다.
한편 프랑크 왕국의 정치·군사적 팽창은 에스파냐 변경백령에서 종교문제를 야기했다. 당시 서고트 교회에 널리 퍼져있던 양자론은 카롤루스 마그누스의 통합 전략을 심각하게 위협할 가능성을 내포하고 있었다. 따라서 카롤루스 왕조는 양자론을 에스파냐 변경백령의 안정성을 저해하는 요소로 간주하고 신속히 제거하고자 했다. 이에 성직자들은 공의회를 통해 양자론을 비판했으며 궁정학자들은 다수의 책과 서한을 통해 양자론자들의 주장을 반박했다. 그 결과 카롤루스 왕조는 에스파냐 변경백령에서 정치·군사적 차원의 지배권과 더불어 문화적 헤게모니 또한 확립할 수 있었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

From the 730s, using the unstable political situations of Iberian Peninsula, the Carolingian dynasty launched into the conquest of Septimania. Charles Martel attacked the major cities in the northernmost, and Pippin III acquired the Nothern Septimania by having close ties with the gothic aristocrats and using appeasement policy. After the tragedy of Roncesvalles campaign in 778, Charlemagne entrusted all Septimanian affairs to his son, Louis I. As the king of Aquitaine, Louis I gradually expanded the territory of the Frankish kingdom with military operations and diplomacy. In consequence, Barcelona was captured in 801, and the boundary of the Spanish March was settled about 820.
But as the furthermost frontier, the circumstances of Spanish Mach were always fluctuant and the ambitious counts could get out of control. Besides, there were many refugees fleeing from the frequent warfares and the persecution. In the situation, the Carolingians created a settlement program, called ‘aprisio’, to make them take root in the wasteland. As a result, they could acquire the labour and military power, and show off their authority to the local communities.
On the other hand, the politico-military expansion of Frankish Empire brought about the religious conflict in the Spanish March. The Adoptionism, held by the Gothic church, was could undermine the integration strategy of Charlemagne. This being so, the Carolingians regarded this doctrine as noxious and tried to eradicate in their new territory. For this purpose, the clergy and court scholars criticized the Adoptionists using various methods, like councils, epistles and sermons. Consequently, the Carolingian dynasty could establish cultural hegemony.
