본 논문의 목적은 후기 김수영의 시에서 새롭게 나타난 과거와 전통에 관한 인식을 이론적으로 재검토하고, 이를 통해 현대시에 대한 김수영의 사유를 역사철학적으로 재규정하는 데 있다. ｢거대한 뿌리｣를 쓰기 시작한 시기에 전면화 된 김수영의 극적 전회를 이해하기 위해서는 과거와 전통에 대한 김수영의 변화된 입장과 현대성에 대한 그의 시적 사유 사이의 이론적 연관관계를 면밀히 검토할 필요가 있다. 김수영이 보여주는 과거에 대한 독특한 입장은 단순히 전통에 대한 긍정적 태도로 환원되지 않으며, 과거의 사실을 복원하는 통상적인 역사주의적 시각과도 동일시 될 수 없기 때문이다. 김수영의 역사적 비전이 지향하는 목표는 과거와 현재를 “연관”시키는 전혀 다른 방식을 발견함으로써 “시간의 인식”(｢엔카운터誌｣) 자체를 변화시키는 데 있다. 이러한 시간에 대한 근본적 인식의 전환은 김수영이 지속적으로 탐색해왔던 ‘현대성’에 대한 사유를 이해하는 데 필수적으로 고려되어야 할 사안이다.
이를 조명하기 위해 이 글은 ｢거대한 뿌리｣와 상호텍스트적 관계를 형성하고 있는 다양한 글을 검토할 예정이다. 2장에서는 ｢거대한 뿌리｣가 제기하는 역사철학적 의제와 물음들을 확인하고, 그것이 현대성에 대한 김수영의 탐구와 밀접한 관련이 있음을 그의 시론을 통해 증명하고자 했다. 3장에서는 ｢거대한 뿌리｣의 창작 동기를 추정할 수 있게 하는 김수영의 번역 텍스트 ｢은자의 왕국 한반도｣를 분석함으로써, 이사벨라 버드 비숍을 통해 김수영이 얻게 된 역사철학적 통찰과 현대시에 대한 사유 사이의 연관관계를 밝히고자 했다. 4장에서는 산문 ｢가장 아름다운 우리말 열 개｣에 대한 분석을 바탕으로 김수영의 역사철학이 ‘현대성’에 대한 독특한 이론적 사유로 나아간다는 것을 규명하고자 했다. 이 글이 제안하는 동시대성(contemporaneity)이라는 새로운 개념은 김수영의 “거대한 뿌리”가 박혀 있다고 말한 “내 땅”을 이론적으로 지시하고, 그의 역사적 비전과 현대성에 대한 이념의 결합 양상을 재정의하는 일종의 대리보충적 개념에 해당한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this article is to theoretically re-examine the Kim Soo-young’s understanding of the past and tradition which emerged in the late poems, and to redefine his idea on modern poetry in terms of philosophy of history. In order to understand Kim Soo-young’s dramatic turn, which began to emerge during the creation of “The Great Root”, it is necessary to closely analyze the theoretical link between Kim Soo-young’s perspective on history and his poetic thinking about modernity. This is because Kim Soo-young’s unique perspective on the past cannot be reduced to a positive attitude toward tradition, nor can it be identified with a conventional historicism, which seeks to faithfully restore the past. The goal of Kim Soo-young’s historical vision is to change the “perception of time” itself by discovering a completely different way of “connecting”(｢The Encounter) the past and the present. The fundamental shift in the perception of time is an essential consideration in understanding the thought of ‘modernity’ that Kim Soo-young has constantly explored.
To illuminate these aspects, this article reviewed various articles that form an inter-textual relationship with “The Great Root”. In Chapter 2, this article tried to confirm the historical and philosophical agenda raised by “The Great Root”, and to prove the intimate relationship between his speculation in history and the idea of modernity by interpreting Kim Soo-young’s poetic prose. Chapter 3 analyzed Kim Soo-young’s translation text, “The Kingdom of the hermit, the Korean Peninsula,” which allows to inter the motive of “Great Roots,” to reveal the relationship between Kim Soo-young’s historical and philosophical insights and his idea on contemporary poetry. Chapter 4 attempted to clarify that Kim Soo-young’s historical philosophy leads to a unique theoretical thought for “contemporary” based on the analysis of the prose “The Ten Most Beautiful Korean Languages”. The new concept of contemporaneity proposed by this article is a supplementary concept that theoretically refers “my land,” in which Kim Soo-young’s “Great Root” is embedded, and redefines the interrelations of his historical vision and idea of contemporary poetry.
