왜관(倭館)의 매일기(每日記) 등을 통해서 19세기 초반 대일무역에 참가한 정자범(鄭子範)의 무역 활동이 밝혀졌다. 그의 아버지 정윤중(鄭允中) 역시 왜관을 드나들면서 무역에 참가하였던 동래상고(東萊商賈) 출신이었다. 정자범은 전주와 서울, 부산을 오가면서 우피(牛皮) 등 무역품을 조달하여 왜관에 판매하였다. 뿐만 아니라 전임 왜학역관(倭學譯官)이 풀지 못했던 공무역(公貿易) 미지급(미수) 문제의 해결에도 그가 기여하는 등 활약을 보였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

From the seventeenth century to the nineteenth century, among the Koreans who participated in trade with Japan were merchants and merchant groups called dojung. Upon receiving permission from Dongnae County, these traders conducted trade inside and outside the Japan House (K. Waegwan), which was located in today`s Yongdusan Park in Busan. This article focuses on the trading activities of one such Dongnae merchant, Jeong Jabeom, who flourished in the 1830s and 1840s. His father Jeong Yunjung, too, participated in trade as a Dongnae merchant into the 1810s. This case, as an example of the status of dojung merchant being hereditary over several generations, has received attention. Father and son together developed an active trade. Traveling from Dongnae (Busan) to Jeonju, then to Seoul, and then from Seoul to Dongnae (Busan), Jeong Jabeom concentrated on supplying cowhides and other goods. And this article shows that he also participated in solving the problem of non-payment (uncollected payment) for official trade that a previous interpreter (hundo) had not been able to resolve.
