This study aims to deconstruct the orientalist interpretations of western view on Korea in the late nineteenth century(Open port period) in relation to hygienic modernity. Edward Said in his groundbreaking book Orientalism has tackled eurocentric view on the Orient. However, Said’s monolithic Orientalism fails to account fully for the complex motives and meanings behind the documents about the Orient that were recorded. Moreover, Orientalism has become clichè, a tired repetition. For this reason, I attempt to challenge orientalist interpretation by examining the western impression of Korea in the late nineteen century. In particular, I focus on “hygienic modernity,” which is often considered as a representation of modernity.
With the opening of Korea in 1876, many foreign visitors and sojourners from the Western countries, including Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and U.S., came to Korea. And they kept records of their impressions on Korea and Korean. The dominant interpretation of Westerners’ impressions on Korea in the late nineteenth century have been monolithically Orientalism. In this paper, I analyze how westerners’ impressions of Korea and Koreans in the late nineteenth century were shaped and developed in various ways as were essentially necessary by the influences of the situations. In so doing, I suggest multiple-layered interpretations of Korean history.

본고는 서양인들이 개항기 조선의 위생에 대해 남겼던 기록을 검토하면서 오리엔탈리즘(Orientalism)에 대해 논하고 또한 오리엔탈리즘을 넘어선 논의의 단초를 마련하려고 한다. 오리엔탈리즘은 서구 중심의 시각에 대해 반대하여 편향된 시각에 대한 새로운 관점을 제시했다는 측면에서 의미있는 기여를 한 것은 사실이지만, 오리엔탈리즘적이라는 비판은 이제 더 이상 새로운 것이 아닌 진부한(clichè) 것이 되어 버렸다. 서세동점의 시대였던 19세기에 조선을 방문한 서양인들에게 위생은 중요한 문제였고, 위생 자체가 근대와 함께 성장한 개념이었다. 위생의 논의를 통해 오리엔탈리즘적 시각을 넘어서기 위해 동시대에 유럽의 대도시로 여겨졌던 프랑스 파리와 영국 런던의 위생 상태에 대한 기록도 함께 살펴보고, 오리엔탈리즘으로 해석할 수 없는 기록들을 발굴하여 오리엔탈리즘이라는 단선적인 해석을 넘어서는 논의를 하려고 한다. 그리고 후속 연구에서 탈-오리엔탈리즘적인 다양한 해석들을 위한 기반을 마련하려고 한다.
