이 논문은 ``중국의 실리콘 밸리``라고 불리는 북경 중관촌이 중국의 현대성과 세계성을 상징하는 담론적 구성물로 전화하게 된 과정을 분석하고 있다. 북경 북서부의 좁은 지역을 지칭하던 중관촌이라는 지명은 1980년대 이후 컴퓨터 거리, 해적판 거리 등의 별칭을 통해 그 존재를 사회에 각인시켰다. 그러나 1990년대 이후 이 지역의 과학기술 산업과 IT 경제의 급속한 발전에 따라 중관촌이 중국 신경제의 대표적인 지역으로 인식되고 국제적인 인지도를 확보함에 따라 북경시 정부는 새롭게 형성된 중관촌의 사회적 이미지를 전용하여 이를 통해 미래에 대한 비전을 제시하기 시작했다. 이를 위해서 국가는 중관촌 재개발사업을 통해 그 지명에 결부된 사회적 이미지를 정화하고, 그 이름 사용을 통제함으로써 중관촌을 재정의하며, 다양한 형태의 관 주도적 사업들을 조직함으로써 그 사회적 인지도를 제고하기 위한 노력을 경주했다. 또한 국가는 북경시 내외의 여러 지역에 산재해 있는 산업 단지를 포괄하는 중관촌과학기술원구, 중관촌국가자주창신시범구라는 이름의 특수 산업단지로 조성함으로써 중국의 현대성과 세계성을 상징하게 된 그 단어의 지리적 외연을 확장하였다. 이러한 중관촌의 상징화 과정은 국가 주도의 현대화 기획의 한 양상이라 할 수 있는데, 여기에는 중관촌의 역사에 대한 선택적인 재서술과 현대성에 대한 이데올로기적인 비전을 공간적으로 재현하는 과정이 핵심적인 계기로 활용되고 있다. 중관촌에서 진행되고 있는 국가 주도의 이 현대화 기획은 여전히 부분적이고 따라서 완전하지는 않지만 북경 시민들의 일상적인 공간적 실천과 경험을 통해 점점 뿌리를 내리고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines the process in which Beijing`s Zhongguancun (ZGC), usually dubbed China`s Silicon Valley, has changed into a discursive construct that symbolizes the modernity and globality of contemporary China. The place name ZGC inscribed its existence into the popular consciousness during the 1980s and 1990s when it came to be associated with nicknames such as Computer Street and Pirates` Street. However, with the rapid development of ZGC`s IT industry, the local government has tried since the turn of the century to present its socio-political agenda by actively appropriating ZGC`s increased domestic and international recognition. The state has made various efforts to purify ZGC`s social images by undertaking a series of gentrification projects as well as trying to redefine its social significations by restricting the social use of the place name, while furthering its goal of increased brand awareness by organizing a series of local events. In addition, the state established the ZGC Science and Technology Park (ZGC National Autonomous Innovation Park), a special high-tech industrial park which encompasses ten different industrial areas scattered in and outside of Beijing, in an effort to socio-politically utilize ZGC`s heightened social recognition. The word ZGC, as a symbol of China`s modernity and globality, has accordingly extended its spatial denotations, whereas it has become increasingly detached from its geographical connotations. The process of ZGC`s symbolization, which can be construed as a facet of the 21st century version of the state-led modernization project, has necessitated the spatial representations of the state`s vision of its socio-economic future as well as the re-description of selected aspects of ZGC`s history. The state-led project of modernity, albeit porous and incomplete, has gradually materialized in the daily life of ordinary people whose spatial practices and experiences are conditioned by the state dominant spatial representations.
