개신교문화원형 <김점동>의 공연콘텐츠 개발방안 연구

최근 문화콘텐츠산업 분야에서 종교전통 및 종교문화원형에 대한 관심이 적지 않다. 이에 대한 연구 성과도 지속적으로 늘어나는 추세이다. 다문화·다종교의 시대에 종교간의 이해를 도모하고 나아가 문화콘텐츠 창작의 열쇠를 이루는 원천자료를 확보하려는 움직임의 일환으로 볼 수 있다. 그러나 종교문화원형의 연구대상 중에서도 개신교문화원형에 대한 연구는 쉽게 찾아보기 어렵다. 개신교문화원형이라는 개념 자체가 학문적으로 본격적 논의 대상이 되지 못했으며, 한국 개신교의 짧은 역사성으로 인해 불교, 유교 등의 전통종교에 비해 문화원형의 개발을 논하는 연구에서 다소 소외되어 있다.
개신교문화원형에 대해서는 전체적인 관심과 함께, 개개 전통에 대한 실제적인 연구가 병행되어야 한다. 본 논문에서는, 개신교문화원형에 대한 개념을 바탕으로 개신교문화원형의 현황과 활용에 대해 개괄적으로 정리하는 한편, 개별 연구대상으로 <김점동>이라는 인물자원을 발굴하여 분석 및 공연콘텐츠로의 개발방안을 모색하였다. <김점동>은 초기 개신교의 역사적 정체성과 신앙공동체의 독특성을 서구중심의 시각이 아닌 한국고유의 시각으로 조명해줄 수 있는 문화원형으로서, 개신교사 주력인물이나 선교사, 목사, 남성 중심의 지도자가 아닌 조선시대의 천민 여성으로서 주체적으로 개신교를 받아들여 한국 최초 여의사가 되기까지의 성(聖)스러운 이야기를 서술하고 있는 개신교 고유의 인물자원이다. 따라서 개신교문화원형 <김점동>의 공연콘텐츠 개발은 그 자체로 우리 개신교문화의 민족적 가치를 지니며, 개신교 수용과 전래의 측면에서 한국 고유의 사유체계가 서술되는 적합한 콘텐츠로 본다.
이에 본 논문은, 문화콘텐츠 산업에서 원천자료의 확보가 중요해지는 현 시점에, 우리 개신교문화원형 <김점동>의 공연콘텐츠 개발방안 연구를 통해 우리의 민족적 토양에서 생성되었던 문화원형에 대한 연구의 활성화를 도모하고, 원형성과 공연예술이 가진 의미와 가치를 소통하여 문화공공재로서 폭넓게 향유될 수 있도록 하는 방안을 제시하는 것을 목표로 한다.
이를 위해 다음과 같이 몇 가지 연구를 실시하였다. 첫째, 개신교문화원형에 대한 개괄적인 이해를 바탕으로 공연콘텐츠의 특성과 함께 기존의 개신교문화원형의 공연콘텐츠 활용 사례에 대해 면밀히 검토하였다. 이를 통해 기존의 개발방안에서 노정되는 문제점들을 정리하여 본 연구대상 <김점동>을 콘텐츠화하는데 활용하였다. 둘째, <김점동>에 관련된 역사적배경 및 가치를 분석하여 정리하였다. 그의 활동 및 역사적 사실을 미국 선교사들의 연례보고, 당시 선교단체에서 제작한 잡지와 단행본 원본, 학술논문 등을 주요 사료로 활용 분석함으로써 정리하였으며, 이러한 정보를 분석하여 공연요소를 추출, 공연콘텐츠의 시나리오가 될 스토리소재를 개발하였다. 셋째, <김점동>의 공연콘텐츠 개발을 위한 범위와 개발모형을 설정하였다. 개발모형은 추출된 스토리 소재를 기반으로, 가상의 인물 추가구성 및 신화적 상상력을 통해 극적인 요소를 더하여 실질적인 공연이 기획될 수 있도록 하는 최종 시나리오(메인시놉시스, 대본), 등장인물, 공연장면, 음악(주제가)을 포함하였다. 넷째, 실제 창작뮤지컬 제작을 실현하는 공연기획서를 개발하여 개신교문화원형 <김점동>의 공연콘텐츠 개발의 구체적인 방안과 방법을 제시하였다.
<김점동>을 개신교문화원형의 가치로 인식하거나 이를 문화콘텐츠로 기획한 연구가 없는 상태에서, 학술적 차원에서의 전개와 콘텐츠 활용을 전제한 실제 현장에서의 연구를 병행함으로써, 소극적 복원과 보존의 측면에 머무르지 않고 적극적개발의 단계로 연구를 확장했다는 점에 본 연구의 의의가 있으며, 개발된 공연콘텐츠를 통해 문화공공재로서 한국 전통문화 및 종교전통의 문화적 자산을 널리 알릴 수 있는 계기가 될 것이며, 또한 한국의 민족적 토양에 개신교를 주체적으로 받아들인 깊이 있는 선조의 정신세계가 서구신학과 서구식 제의문화에 익숙한 개신교주류에 새로운 한국적 아이콘으로서 가시화될 수 있기를 기대해 본다.
